County Longford ( gle, Contae an Longfoirt) is a county in Ireland. It is in the province of Leinster. It is named after the town of Longford. Longford County Council is the local authority for the county. The population of the county was 46,634 at the 2022 census. The county is based on the historic Gaelic territory of Annaly (''Anghaile''), formerly known as Teffia (''Teathbha''). Geography Most of Longford lies in the basin of the River Shannon with Lough Ree forming much of the county's western boundary. The north-eastern part of the county, however, drains towards the River Erne and Lough Gowna. Francis Aungier, 1st Earl Of Longford
Francis Aungier, 1st Earl of Longford PC (Ire) (ca. 163223 December 1700) was an English politician, who sat in the House of Commons from 1660 to 1679. He was an administrator in Ireland. Aungier was the son of Ambrose Aungier, chancellor of St Patrick's Cathedral, Dublin, and his wife Grizzell Bulkeley, daughter of Lancelot Bulkeley, Archbishop of Dublin. The Aungier family originated from Cambridgeshire, but his grandfather was appointed Master of the Rolls in Ireland. Aungier inherited the Barony on the death of his uncle, Gerald Aungier, 2nd Baron Aungier of Longford, in 1655. Aungier inherited some property in Surrey, and in 1660, he was elected Member of Parliament for Surrey in the Convention Parliament. In 1661 he was appointed governor of Westmeath and Longford. He was elected MP for Arundel in 1661 and sat until 1679. He was created Viscount Longford in the Peerage of Ireland in 1675 and Earl of Longford in 1677. George Forbes, 4th Earl Of Granard
George Forbes, 4th Earl of Granard (15 March 1710 – 16 October 1769) was an Irish soldier and politician. Early life He was the eldest son of George Forbes, 3rd Earl of Granard by his wife Mary, daughter of William Stewart, 1st Viscount Mountjoy; while heir-apparent to the earldom he was styled Viscount Forbes. Career Forbes entered the Army in 1726, and served as Quartermaster-General in Ireland from 1754 to 1757. He was lieutenant-colonel in the Tangier Regiment in 1756, then colonel of the 76th Regiment of Foot the same year. He was promoted to major-general in 1759, transferred to the colonelcy of the 29th Regiment of Foot in 1761, and was promoted lieutenant-general in 1765. Besides his military career, Forbes sat in the Irish House of Commons for Mullingar from 1749 until he succeeded to his father's seat in the Irish House of Lords in 1765. George Forbes, 5th Earl of Granard PC (2 April 1740 – 15 April 1780) was an Anglo-Irish politician and peer. Early life Forbes was born on 2 April 1740. He was the only son of Lt.-Gen. George Forbes, 4th Earl of Granard and the former Letitia Davys (d. 1778), who were first cousins (their mother's were sisters). His paternal grandparents were George Forbes, 3rd Earl of Granard and the Hon. Mary (née Stewart) Preston (widow of Phineas Preston and eldest daughter of William Stewart, 1st Viscount Mountjoy). His mother was the daughter of Arthur Davys and Hon. Catherine Stewart (second daughter of the 1st Viscount Mountjoy). George Forbes, 6th Earl of Granard PC (Ire) (14 June 1760 – 9 June 1837), was an Irish general and peer. Early life Forbes was born on 14 June 1760 and was educated at Armagh. He was the eldest son of George Forbes, 5th Earl of Granard, by his first wife, Dorothea Bayly, second daughter of Sir Nicholas Bayly, 2nd Baronet, of the Isle of Anglesea, and great-grandson of Admiral George Forbes, 3rd Earl of Granard. On succeeding to the title in 1780, the year after his marriage, he made a lengthened tour on the continent. He was introduced to Cardinal Henry Benedict Stuart at Rome, attended one of Frederick the Great's reviews in Silesia, and resided in France and at Vienna. ''Custos rotulorum'' (; plural: ''custodes rotulorum''; Latin for "keeper of the rolls", ) is a civic post that is recognised in the United Kingdom (except Scotland) and in Jamaica. England, Wales and Northern Ireland The ''custos rotulorum'' is the keeper of an English, Welsh and Northern Irish county's records and, by virtue of that office, the highest civil officer in the county. The position is now largely ceremonial. The appointment lay with the Lord Chancellor until 1545, but is now exercised by the Crown, under the Royal sign-manual, and is usually held by a person of rank. The appointment has been united with that of the lord-lieutenancy of the county throughout England since 1836. The ''custos rotulorum'' of Lancashire was formerly appointed by the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, and that of County Durham vested in the Bishop of Durham until the abolition of its palatine rights.
