Culture Of Panama
Panamanian culture is a hybrid of African, Native Panamanian, and European culture - specifically Spanish. For example, the ''tamborito'' is a Spanish dance that was blended with Native American rhythms and dance moves. Dance is a symbol of the diverse cultures that have coupled in Panama. The local folklore can be experienced through a multitude of festivals, dances and traditions that have been handed down from generation to generation. Amelia Denis De Icaza
Amelia Denis de Icaza (November 28, 1836 – July 16, 1911) was a Colombian and later a Panamanian romantic poet. She was the first Panamanian woman to publish her poetry. Biography Born in Panama City in 1836, her father was of French origin and her mother Panamanian. As a child, she was very interested in literature and wrote poems in a completely natural style without any trimmings. Her father Saturnino Denis was an editor at the time. She went to the local school in the Santa Ana district but received most of her cultural education at home, meeting poets whose works were published in ''La Floresta Istmeña''. She married while still young and spent a lengthy period in Nicaragua. By some accounts, she also spent quite some time in Guatemala. When she returned home, the Panama Canal Zone was in the hands of the Americans. Ricardo Miró
Ricardo Miró Denis (November 5, 1883 in Panama City, Panama – March 2, 1940) was a Panamanian writer and is considered Panama's national poet. He traveled to Bogotá at the age of fifteen to study painting, but was forced to return to Panama in 1899 due to the Thousand Days' War. His first verses were published by the magazine ''Isthmus Herald'', where he worked for 10 years. Miró traveled to Spain between 1908 and 1911, where he had the position of consul in Barcelona. In 1909, his poem "Patria" (Native Land) was published. His work was characterized as being nostalgic and filled with the author's thoughts about living away from his own native land. In 1917, he returned to Panama to serve as director of the National Archives until 1927 and as a secretary for the Academia Panameña de la Lengua until 1940. He died on March 2, 1940, in Panama City.
