Crush Protection Device
An operator protection device (OPD) is a device that protects the operator of machinery. The term has been adopted by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) to describe devices used to protect all-terrain vehicle (ATV) riders from being crushed in the event of an accident. In the event of an ATV rollover, an OPD will flex over or around a person on the ground while bearing the load of the ATV - thus preventing the rider from being crushed. In 2017 the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) began investigating the mandatory safety standard for ATVs. This resulted in legislation requiring all new quad bikes to have an operator protection device (OPD) fitted. The safety standard issued by the ACCC specified two models: the Quadbar and the ATV Lifeguard. Since the standard has been issued, the makers of ATV Lifeguard have developed and released the QuadGuard. OPDs are sometimes referred to as crush protection devices (CPD) or roll-over protecti ... Australian Competition And Consumer Commission
The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) is the chief competition regulator of the Government of Australia, located within the Department of the Treasury. It was established in 1995 with the amalgamation of the Australian Trade Practices Commission and the Prices Surveillance Authority to administer the '' Trade Practices Act 1974'', which was replaced by the ''Competition and Consumer Act 2010'' on 1 January 2011. The ACCC's mandate is to protect consumer rights and business rights and obligations, to perform industry regulation and price monitoring, and to prevent illegal anti-competitive behaviour. Historical origins The ACCC's deeper origins are found in the Restrictive Trade Practices Act of Sir Garfield Barwick, Attorney-General in the Liberal Government of Sir Robert Menzies in 1965.Hocking, Jenny, ''Lionel Murphy: a political biography'', Cambridge University Press, Cambridge, UK, 2000 . p.204 Opponents derided Barwick's Trade Practices Act 1965 as " ... All-terrain Vehicle
An all-terrain vehicle (ATV), also known as a light utility vehicle (LUV), a quad bike or quad (if it has four wheels), as defined by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), is a vehicle that travels on low-pressure tires, has a seat that is straddled by the operator, and has handlebars, similar to a motorcycle. As the name implies, it is designed to handle a wider variety of terrain than most other vehicles. It is street-legal in some countries, but not in most states, territories and provinces of Australia, the United States, and Canada. By the current ANSI definition, ATVs are intended for use by a single operator, but some ATVs, referred to as tandem ATVs, have been developed for use by the driver and one passenger. The rider sits on and operates these vehicles like a motorcycle, but the extra wheels give more stability at slower speeds. Although most are equipped with three or four wheels, six or eight wheel (tracked) models exist and have existed historicall ... ATV Lifeguard
ATV Lifeguard is a flexible crush protection device (CPD) used on all-terrain vehicles (ATV)s. In the event of an ATV rollover, the ATV Lifeguard will flex over a person on the ground while bearing the load of the ATV - thus preventing the rider from being crushed. ATV Lifeguard is the only flexible roll bar for ATVs - it is made of 60 segments that all flex and move. The Lifeguard is installed on the rear rack of an ATV. It can support weights up to . Lifeguard was invented by Vernon Suckling, founder of Ag-tech Industries, a company based in Dargaville, New Zealand. Australian Inventions
This is a timeline of Australian inventions consisting of products and technology invented in Australia from pre-European-settlement in 1788 to the present. The inventions are listed in chronological order based on the date of their introduction. Australian inventions include the very old, such as woomera, and the very new, such as the scramjet, first fired at the Woomera rocket range. The Australian government has suggested that Australian inventiveness springs from the nation's geography and isolation. Perhaps due to its status as an island continent connected to the rest of the world only via air and sea, Australians have been leaders in inventions relating to both maritime and aeronautical matters, including powered flight, the black box flight recorder, the inflatable escape slide, the surf ski and the wave-piercing catamaran winged keel. Since the earliest days of European settlement, Australia's main industries have been agriculture and mining. As a result of this, A ...
