''Transformers: Generation 1'' (also known as ''Generation One'' or ''G1'') is a toy line from 1984 to 1990, produced by Hasbro and Takara Tomy. Inaugurating the successful ''Transformers'' toy and entertainment franchise, the line of toy robots could change into an alternate form (vehicles such as cars and planes, miniature guns or cassettes, animals, and even dinosaurs) by moving parts into other places. The line was originally called ''The Transformers'', with "Generation 1" originating as a term coined by fans of the toys when the Transformers: Generation 2 toy line was released in 1992. Hasbro eventually adopted the term "Generation 1" to refer to any toy produced in that era. The Transformers started as a joint venture between Hasbro of the United States and Takara of Japan. An action figure is a poseable character model figure made most commonly of plastic, and often based upon characters from a film, comic book, military, video game, television program, or sport; fictional or historical. These figures are usually marketed toward boys and adult collectors. The term was coined by Hasbro in 1964 to market G.I. Joe to boys (while competitors called similar offerings ''boy's dolls''). According to a 2005 study in Sweden, action figures which display traditional masculine traits primarily target boys. While most commonly marketed as a child's toy, the action figure has gained widespread acceptance as collector item for adults. In such a case, the item may be produced and designed on the assumption it will be bought solely for display as a collectible and not played with like a child's toy. James Shooter (born September 27, 1951) is an American writer, editor, and publisher in the comics industry. Beginning his career writing for DC Comics at the age of 14, he had a successful but controversial run as editor-in-chief at Marvel Comics, and launched comics publishers Valiant Comics, Valiant, Defiant Comics, Defiant, and Broadway Comics, Broadway. Optimus Prime
Optimus Prime, also known in Japan as is a fictional character and the main protagonist of the ''Transformers'' franchise. Generally depicted as a brave and noble leader, Optimus Prime is the supreme commander of the Autobots in their fight against the Decepticons. The ''Transformers'' characters were developed for the American market after Hasbro representatives visited the 1983 Tokyo Toy Show. Some designs were modified and the coloring was changed; notably, Optimus Prime (released in 1982 as Diaclone No. 17 - Battle Convoy and in 1984 as Powered Convoy) was colored red, chrome, and dark blue. This article shows a list of characters from ''The Transformers'' television series that aired during the debut of the American and Japanese Transformers media franchise from 1984 to 1991. Autobots The Autobots (also known as Cybertrons in Japan) are the heroes in the '' Transformers toyline'' and related spin-off comics and cartoons.
