Crime Victims' Rights Week
National Crime Victims' Rights Week is an annual commemoration in the United States that promotes victims' rights and services. The week is marked by an award ceremony held in Washington, D.C., in which individuals and organizations that demonstrate outstanding service in supporting victims and victim services are recognized. The exact date of the observance is the second Monday of June, which falls on June 9th 2025 this year. The first Crime Victims Week (later renamed National Crime Victims' Rights Week) was established by Ronald Reagan in 1981 as a part of an expanding initiative to provide for victims of crimes (later manifested iExecutive Order 12360 signed in 1982, which established the President's Task Force on Victims of Crime). The Office for Victims of Crime (OVC) is a part of the Office of Justice Programs, within the United States Department of Justice, U.S. Department of Justice. The OVC's mission is to provide aid and promote justice for crime victims. The office was created in 1988 in an USA PATRIOT Act, Title VI#Subtitle B--Amendments to the Victims of Crime Act of 1984, amendment to the Victims of Crime Act of 1984, Victims of Crime Act (VOCA) of 1984. OVC sponsors the annual Crime Victims' Rights Week that promotes victims' rights and services. Jessica E. Hart was appointed to the role of Director by President Donald Trump and sworn in on March 31, 2020. She left office on January 20, 2021. Crime has been recorded in the United States since its founding and has fluctuated significantly over time. Most available data underestimate crime before the 1930s (due to incomplete datasets and other factors), giving the false impression that crime was low in the early 1900s and had a sharp rise after. In philosophy and psychology, awareness is the perception or knowledge of something. The concept is often synonymous with consciousness. However, one can be aware of something without being explicitly conscious of it, such as in the case of blindsight. The states of awareness are also associated with the states of experience so that the structure represented in awareness is mirrored in the structure of experience.
