Crashing Thru (1939 Film)
''Crashing Thru'' is a 1939 American northern action film directed by Elmer Clifton and starring James Newill, Jean Carmen and Warren Hull.Pitts p.72 It is based on the 1935 novel ''Renfrew Rides the Range'', the seventh in the popular Renfrew of the Royal Mounted series by Laurie York Erskine. The film was shot at the Iverson Ranch and on location around Big Bear Lake in the San Bernardino Mountains of California. It was originally intended to be released by Grand National Pictures before being picked up for distribution by Monogram. Plot The steamship on which two Mountie officers are travelling is held up and robbed of its gold shipment. They pursue the gang up into the hills but are unable to detain them, They suspect one of the female passengers to be in on the job and arrest her. Elmer Clifton Forsyth (March 14, 1890 – October 15, 1949) was an American director, screenwriter, and actor from the early silent days. Early life Elmer Clifton Forsyth was born in Toronto, Canada, to Cecil Carl Forsyth and Margaret Nicolle. Career A collaborator of D.W. Griffith, Clifton appeared in ''The Birth of a Nation'' (1915) and ''Intolerance'' (1916) before giving up acting in 1917 to concentrate on work behind the camera, with Griffith and Joseph Henabery as his mentors. His first feature-length solo effort as a director was ''The Flame of Youth'' with Jack Mulhall. Clifton honed his talents during the late 1910s, directing vehicles for Mulhall and Herbert Rawlinson at Universal and then for Dorothy Gish for Famous Players–Lasky. Roy Barcroft (born Howard Harold Ravenscroft; September 7, 1902 – November 28, 1969) was an American character actor famous for playing villains in B-Westerns and other genres. From 1937 to 1957, he appeared in more than 300 films for Republic Pictures. Film critic Leonard Maltin acclaimed Barcroft as "Republic Pictures' number one bad guy". Background Barcroft was born to a farming family in Crab Orchard, Nebraska, in 1902. William Stanley Blystone (August 1, 1894 – July 16, 1956) was an American film actor who made more than 500 films appearances from 1924 to 1956.
