Jacques Cousteau Island
Isla Cerralvo (), as is commonly named, whose official name is Isla Jacques Cousteau (; ), is an island located off the Cerralvo Canal coast near La Paz, Baja California Sur, Mexico. It is long with a land area of , and is the ninth-largest island in Mexico. The island is adjacent to the towns of El Sargento and La Ventana and is part of Municipality of La Paz. The island peak comes to and the ridge line runs north–south with many small streams draining east to Gulf of California and west to Cupalo Canal. There are many steep bluffs on the eastern sides and many sandy beaches and points on the west side. There is abundant marine life surrounding this island which are due to underwater topography and ocean currents and are the traditional fishing grounds of the local ejidos and is dotted with temporary fish camps. Fabien Cousteau (born 2 October 1967) is an aquanaut, ocean conservationist, and documentary filmmaker. As the first grandson of Jacques Cousteau, Fabien spent his early years aboard his grandfather's ships Calypso and Alcyone, and learned how to scuba dive on his fourth birthday. From 2000 to 2002, he was Explorer-at-Large for ''National Geographic'' and collaborated on a television special aimed at changing public attitudes about sharks called "Attack of the Mystery Shark". Jacques-Yves Cousteau, (, also , ; 11 June 191025 June 1997) was a French naval officer, oceanographer, filmmaker and author. He co-invented the first successful open-circuit self-contained underwater breathing apparatus (SCUBA), called the Aqua-Lung, which assisted him in producing some of the first underwater documentary, documentaries. Cousteau wrote many books describing his undersea explorations. In his first book, ''The Silent World: A Story of Undersea Discovery and Adventure'', Cousteau surmised the existence of the Animal echolocation, echolocation abilities of porpoises. Janice Cousteau ( Sullivan; 5 April 1939) is the widow of undersea explorer Philippe Cousteau and joined the Cousteau team on 20 expeditions over 12 years. She and Philippe married in Paris. Jean-Michel Cousteau (born 6 May 1938) is a French oceanographic explorer, environmentalist, educator and film producer. The first son of ocean explorer Jacques Cousteau, he is the father of Fabien Cousteau and Céline Cousteau. Life and career Cousteau is the son of Jacques-Yves Cousteau and Simone Cousteau, who were business partners. Cousteau first dived with an aqua-lung in 1945 when he was seven years old. Although he went to school to study architecture, he joined his father's Cousteau Society, serving for twenty years as executive vice president before striking out on his own in 1993 to produce environmental films. Cousteau and his father disagreed on the management and policies of the Society. After Cousteau opened a resort on a Fiji island utilizing the family name, Jacques-Yves Cousteau filed a lawsuit against him in 1996.
