The Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU or Cosatu) is a trade union federation in South Africa. The Federation of South African Trade Unions (FOSATU) was a trade union federation in South Africa. History The federation was formed at a congress over the weekend of 14–15 April 1979 in Hammanskraal and officially launched five days later on 20 April. Its roots lay in the unions which had emerged from the spontaneous 1973 strike wave by black workers in Durban and Pinetown as part of the "Durban Moment", and which had since been part of the Trade Union Advisory Co-ordinating Council or the Black Consultative Committee. FOSATU's constitution enshrined the principles of workers' control of their trade unions, non-racialism, worker independence from party politics, international worker solidarity and trade union unity. It strove to build a tight national federation to work towards an industrial workers' bloc firmly based in strong grassroots organisation on the factory floor. Elijah Barayi
Elijah Barayi (15 June 1930 – 24 January 1994) was a South African trade union leader. Born in Cradock, Barayi hoped to study at the Fort Hare University, but his family were unable to afford tuition, so he instead became a clerk at the Department of Native Affairs. He joined the African National Congress (ANC) in 1952, and worked closely with James Calata. He participated in the Defiance Campaign, presenting himself at a local police station without papers after curfew, for which he was sentenced to one month in prison. In 1960, the ANC was banned, and Barayi was again arrested, and held for five months. Following release, he moved to Brakpan to escape police harassment, and found work in personnel at a gold mine. In 1973, he moved to a similar role in Carletonville, and there was elected as the chair of the mine's liaison committee. The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) is a mainly Mining industry of South Africa, mining industry related trade union, an organisation of workers with common goals through organised labour, in South Africa. Solly Phetoe
Solly Phetoe is a South African trade union leader. Phetoe was born in Broederstroom and grew up in Skeerport. He studied at the Eden College of Braamfontein, where he became involved in anti-apartheid activism. In 1982, he became a machine operator at the Firestone Tire and Rubber Company, where he joined the Metal and Allied Workers' Union. This became part of the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (NUMSA). Phetoe became a shop steward, and later worked full-time covering the tyre industry for the union. In 2000, Phetoe became a provincial organiser for the South African Democratic Teachers Union, then in 2003 became the North West provincial organiser for the Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU). The United Democratic Front (UDF) was a South African popular front that existed from 1983 to 1991. The UDF comprised more than 400 public organizations including trade unions, students' unions, women's and parachurch organizations. The UDF's goal was to establish a "non-racial, united South Africa in which segregation is abolished and in which society is freed from institutional and systematic racism."
