Corvus
''Corvus'' is a widely distributed genus of medium-sized to large birds in the family Corvidae. It includes species commonly known as crows, ravens and rooks. The species commonly encountered in Europe are the carrion crow, the hooded crow, the common raven and the rook; those discovered later were named "crow" or "raven" chiefly on the basis of their size, crows generally being smaller. The genus name is Latin for "crow". The 45 or so members of this genus occur on all temperate continents except South America, and several islands. The ''Corvus'' genus makes up a third of the species in the family Corvidae. The members appear to have evolved in Asia from the corvid stock, which had evolved in Australia. In heraldry, crows and ravens are not distinguished from each other. A crow or raven is usually depicted with hairy feathers and closed wings. Corvus is a small constellation in the Southern Celestial Hemisphere. Its name means "crow" in Latin. One of the 48 constellations listed by the 2nd-century astronomer Ptolemy, it depicts a raven, a bird associated with stories about the god Apollo, perched on the back of Hydra the water snake. The four brightest stars, Gamma, Delta, Epsilon, and Beta Corvi, form a distinctive quadrilateral in the night sky. Corvulus (also Corvolus) was the Duke of Friuli for a brief spell in the early eighth century AD (probably 705 or 706). He replaced Ferdulf, but he offended King Aripert II and was arrested and his eyes gouged out. He lived in obscurity and shame as a blind exile thereafter, according to Paul the Deacon. He was ultimately replaced by Pemmo. "Corvulus" literally means "little raven" in Latin, so this may have been a hypocoristic or Latinization for the Duke's real birth name (as a likely ethnic Lombard who assimilated to Italo-Roman culture). Marcus Valerius Corvus (c. 370–270 BC) was a military commander and politician from the early-to-middle period of the Roman Republic. During his career he was elected consul six times, first at the age of twenty-three. He was appointed dictator twice and led the armies of the Republic in the First Samnite War. Joannes Corvus ( fl. 1512 – 1544), or Johannes Corvus, was a Flemish portrait painter who was active in the 16th century. Biography Corvus has been identified with Jan Rave, a native of Bruges, received master in that town in 1512, who subsequently came to England, and, like many of his fellow-countrymen, Latinised his name. George Vertue was the first to discover his existence, finding the inscription ''Joannes Corvus Flandrus faciebat'' on the frame of a portrait of Bishop Fox, the founder, at Corpus Christi College, Oxford, which he engraved for Richard Fiddes's ''Life of Cardinal Wolsey''. In 1820 this portrait was placed in a new and gorgeous frame, and the old frame was destroyed. USS ''Corvus'' (AKA-26) was an in service with the United States navy from 1944 to 1946. She was scrapped in 1964. History ''Corvus'' (AKA-26) was named after the southern constellation Corvus. She was launched 24 September 1944 by Walsh-Kaiser Co., Inc., Providence, R.I., under a Maritime Commission contract; sponsored by Mrs. O. Parks; acquired by the Navy 20 November 1944; and commissioned the same day. ''Corvus'' departed Providence 2 December 1944 for San Francisco, where she loaded cargo for Leyte. Arriving in the Philippines 21 February 1945, ''Corvus'' discharged cargo at Guiuan for the establishment of an air base there, and transferred cargo at Dulag.
