Genus
Genus ( plural genera ) is a taxonomic rank used in the biological classification of living and fossil organisms as well as viruses. In the hierarchy of biological classification, genus comes above species and below family. In binomial nomenclature, the genus name forms the first part of the binomial species name for each species within the genus. :E.g. '' Panthera leo'' (lion) and '' Panthera onca'' (jaguar) are two species within the genus ''Panthera''. ''Panthera'' is a genus within the family Felidae. The composition of a genus is determined by taxonomists. The standards for genus classification are not strictly codified, so different authorities often produce different classifications for genera. There are some general practices used, however, including the idea that a newly defined genus should fulfill these three criteria to be descriptively useful: # monophyly – all descendants of an ancestral taxon are grouped together (i.e. phylogenetic analysis should c ... Raphitoma Hispidella
''Raphitoma'' is a genus of sea snails, marine gastropod mollusks in the family Raphitomidae. The type species ''Pleurotoma hystrix'' Cristofori and Jan, 1832 is a nomen nudum. It has been validated by Bellardi, 1847 as “''Pleurotoma histrix'' Jan.” Distribution This genus occurs in European waters, in the northern part of the Mediterranean Sea, and in the Atlantic Ocean off Cape Verde, West Africa and Angola. Taxonomy history The genus ''Raphitoma'' was created in 1847 by Luigi Bellardi (1818-1889) in his "Monographie des Pleurotomes fossiles du Piémont" for species in different groups without operculum. ''Raphitoma'' now contains many species formerly assigned to ''Pleurotoma'' Lamarck, 1799, ''Clathurella'' (Carpenter, 1857) and ''Philbertia'' (Monterosato, 1884). ''Philbertia'' was synonymized with ''Raphitoma'' in 1990 because Dr. Philippe Bouchet did not consider valid the subdivision of species into different genera solely on the basis of differences during ... Accessed through: World Register of Marine Species at http://www.marinespecies.org/aphia.php?p=taxdetails&id=433399 on 2016-03-03 Description The size of the shell attains 14 mm, its width 5 mm. (Original description) The shell is yellowish white with a pink vertex and the interspaces between the ribs of a pink brown, generally rather pale. The shell contains seven or eight whorls, two of which belong to the nucleus. The nucleus is glassy polished, smooth, swollen, rounded, its second whorl with an obsolete peripheral keel . The remainder of the shell has a rather strong sculpture. The spiral sculpture consists of three or four strong and a few much finer ridges between the sutures and in front of the anal fasciole. On the body whorl these continue over the base and siphonal canal. The anal fasciole shows on ... [...More Info...]       [...Related Items...]     OR:     [Wikipedia]   [Google]   [Baidu]   |

Cordieria Ovalis
''Cordieria ovalis'' is a species of sea snail, a marine gastropod mollusk in the family Borsoniidae. Description The size of the shell attains 13 mm, its width 9 mm. (Original description) The small, oval shall has a short spire consisting of 4 rapidly diminishing whorls. The outline of the whorls is slightly convex. The oval aperture measures rather less than half the length of the shell. The outer lip is thick, the inner lip is not callous. The columella shows 3 distinct folds. The aperture is obtuse anteriorly. Each whorl has about 15 radial costae slightly raised and continuous from suture to suture. These costae are turned slightly backward. A number of sharp spiral threads, which, however, are interrupted, on the costae. The suture is impressed and not bordered. On the body whorl the costae decrease anteriorly, and are not distinct on the base. Many of the spiral threads, however, continue into the aperture. This shell, owing to the coarseness of its sculpture ... [...More Info...]       [...Related Items...]     OR:     [Wikipedia]   [Google]   [Baidu]   |

Sea Snail
Sea snail is a common name for slow-moving marine gastropod molluscs, usually with visible external shells, such as whelk or abalone. They share the taxonomic class Gastropoda with slugs, which are distinguished from snails primarily by the absence of a visible shell. Definition Determining whether some gastropods should be called sea snails is not always easy. Some species that live in brackish water (such as certain neritids) can be listed as either freshwater snails or marine snails, and some species that live at or just above the high tide level (for example species in the genus '' Truncatella'') are sometimes considered to be sea snails and sometimes listed as land snails A land snail is any of the numerous species of snail that live on land, as opposed to the sea snails and freshwater snails. ''Land snail'' is the common name for terrestrial gastropod mollusks that have shells (those without shells are known .... Anatomy Sea snails are a very large group o ... Siphonal Canal
The siphonal canal is an anatomical feature of the shells of certain groups of sea snails within the clade Neogastropoda. Some sea marine gastropods have a soft tubular anterior extension of the mantle called a siphon through which water is drawn into the mantle cavity and over the gill and which serves as a chemoreceptor to locate food. Siphonal canals allow for active transport of water to sensory organs inside the shell. Organisms without siphonal canals in their shells rely on passive or diffuse transport or water into their shell. Those with siphonal canals have a direct inhalant stream of water that interacts with sensory organs to detect concentration and direction of a stimulus, such as food or mates. In certain groups of carnivorous snails, where the siphon is particularly long, the structure of the shell has been modified in order to house and protect the soft structure of the siphon. Thus the siphonal canal is a semi-tubular extension of the aperture of the s ... [...More Info...]       [...Related Items...]     OR:     [Wikipedia]   [Google]   [Baidu]   |
