Coquihalla River
The Coquihalla River (originally or more recently and popularly ) is a tributary of the Fraser River in the Cascade Mountains of the Canadian province of British Columbia. It originates in the Coquihalla Lakes and empties into the Fraser River at Hope. The Coquihalla River forms the northern boundary of two portions of the Cascades, the Skagit Range and the Hozameen Range. The river flows through a deep, narrow valley, dropping in , a tumultuous course that creates an incessant roar. ''Kw'ikw'iyá:la'' in the Halkomelem language of the '' Stó:lō'', is a place name meaning "stingy container" or "stingy place". It refers specifically to a deep pool named ''Skw'éxweq'' or ''Skw'exwáq'', near the mouth of what is now known as the Coquihalla River. The ''Stó:lō'' would go to this pool to spear suckerfish, which were plentiful there. Coquihalla Canyon Provincial Park
Coquihalla Canyon Park is on the north shore of the Coquihalla River in southwestern British Columbia. This provincial park includes the Othello Tunnels to the east and the mouth of the Nicolum River to the south. The tunnels were part of the Kettle Valley Railway (KV). Off Othello Rd, the locality is by road about east of Hope. Physiography Granite batholiths intrude from the metamorphic rock formed from the earlier sedimentary rock and volcanic rock. Erosion and the rock composition cause the deep canyon walls to continually fragment. The winding river creates cascades and rapids through the narrow gorge. Large seasonal fluctuations in water levels can cause log jams. Pioneer trail Side hill cuts in the park area evidence the former Hope–Nicola cattle trail, which may have existed as early as 1846 but was substantially upgraded by the province in the mid-1870s. Coquihalla Summit
Coquihalla Summit (el. ) is a highway summit along the Coquihalla Highway in British Columbia, Canada. It is the highest point on the highway between the cities of Hope and Merritt. It is located just south of the former toll booth plaza on the Coquihalla Highway, about north of Hope, and south of Merritt and is the divide between the Coquihalla River and the Coldwater River. Coquihalla Summit is not actually the highest point on the Coquihalla Highway, rather the Surrey Lake Summit at is the highest point on the Coquihalla section of Highway 5, which runs from Hope to the Highway 1 interchange outside of Kamloops. The ascent to the Coquihalla Summit is very steep, especially from the south, and is particularly steep north of the Great Bear snow shed.
