Cook County Treasurer
The Cook County treasurer is the treasurer of county government in Cook County, Illinois Office description The Cook County treasurer oversees the second-largest system of property tax collection and distribution in the United States. The inaugural holder of the office of treasurer was Archibald Clybourn, an early settler of Cook County. The office was established in 1831, and since 1835 has been an elected, partisan position. Its elected terms were initially two years in length- Prior to 1835, it was appointed by the three-member Cook County Board of Commissioners. Today the terms are four years. The treasurer holds responsibility for printing and mailing bills based on data they are provided by other county and state agencies regarding assessments, exemptions, and tax rate. Maria Pappas
Maria Pappas is a Greek American attorney and politician who has served as the Cook County Treasurer since 1998. Prior to that, she served two terms on the Cook County Board of Commissioners; first as one of ten members elected from Chicago and then, after the board moved to single-member constituencies, as the member from the 10th district. Early life Pappas was born June 7, 1949, in Warwood, a neighborhood of Wheeling, West Virginia, to first generation Greek American parents. She earned a bachelor's degree in sociology from West Liberty State College and a master's degree in counseling at West Virginia University. She then relocated to Chicago to work at the Adler Institute with Rudolf Dreikurs. She earned her Ph.D. from Loyola University in 1976. Robert M. Sweitzer (May 10, 1868 – April 6, 1938) was an American politician. A Democrat, Sweitzer served as Cook County Clerk for 24 years, and briefly served as Cook County Treasurer until his removal from office due to allegations of financial impropriety. Sweitzer was his party's nominee for Mayor of Chicago in 1915 and 1919, losing both consecutive elections to Republican William Hale Thompson.
