Convento Dell'Incontro
Convento dell'Incontro is a Franciscan monastery that sits on the highest hill top south west of Florence in Bagno a Ripoli. It was the site of the Battle of Incontro on 8 August 1944 when the 2nd Battalion Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry plus attachments took the position against fierce opposition from a German Panzergrenadier Regiment. The Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry were awarded a Battle Honour, probably the only occasion this has been awarded to a single battalion. Duke Of Cornwall's Light Infantry
The Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry (DCLI) was a Light infantry, light infantry regiment of the British Army in existence from 1881 to 1959. The regiment was created on 1 July 1881 as part of the Childers Reforms, by the merger of the 32nd (Cornwall) Regiment of Foot, 32nd (Cornwall Light Infantry) Regiment of Foot and the 46th (South Devonshire) Regiment of Foot. The DCLI also incorporated the militia (United Kingdom), militia and Volunteer Force (Great Britain), rifle volunteers of Cornwall. In 1959 the regiment merged with the Somerset Light Infantry, Somerset Light Infantry (Prince Albert's) to form the Somerset and Cornwall Light Infantry. Churchill Tank
The Tank, Infantry, Mk IV (A22) Churchill was a British infantry tank used in the Second World War, best known for its heavy armour, large longitudinal chassis with all-around tracks with multiple bogies, its ability to climb steep slopes, and its use as the basis of many specialist vehicles. It was one of the heaviest Allied tanks of the war. The origins of the Churchill's design lay in the expectation that war in Europe might be fought in conditions similar to those of the First World War, and thus emphasised the ability to cross difficult ground. The Churchill was hurried into production in order to build up British defences against a possible German invasion. A battle honour is an award of a right by a government or sovereign to a military unit to emblazon the name of a battle or operation on its flags ("colours"), uniforms or other accessories where ornamentation is possible.
