Eça De Queiroz
José Maria de Eça de Queiroz (; 25 November 1845 – 16 August 1900) is generally considered to have been the greatest Portuguese writer in the realist style. Zola considered him to be far greater than Flaubert. In the London ''Observer'', Jonathan Keates ranked him alongside Dickens, Balzac and Tolstoy. Biography Eça de Queiroz was born in Póvoa de Varzim, Portugal, in 1845. An illegitimate child, he was officially recorded as the son of José Maria de Almeida Teixeira de Queiroz and Carolina Augusta Pereira d'Eça. His unmarried mother left home so that her son could be born away from social scandal. Although his parents married when he was four years old, he lived with his paternal grandparents until he was ten. At age 16, he went to Coimbra to study law at the University of Coimbra; there he met the poet Antero de Quental. The Mandarin (novel)
''The Mandarin'' ( Portuguese: ''O Mandarim'') is a novella on the sin of avarice by José Maria de Eça de Queirós (1845 - 1900), also known as Eça de Queiroz. It was first published in Portuguese in 1880. The first English version, translated by Richard Franko Goldman, was published by The Bodley Head in 1965. A translation by Margaret Jull Costa, was published by Dedalus Books in 1993. A revised version was published by Dedalus in 2009, together with three short stories. Background The story was serialized in a shorter version in the ''Diário de Portugal'' and, with the addition of six chapters, it was sold as a book in 1881. It was initially attacked as being a departure from the realist style used by Eça in his earlier works. He was also accused of plagiarising the idea from a story by Alphonse Daudet, although ''The Mandarin'' was accepted for serialization in the French ''Revue Universelle Internationale'' in 1884. Manoel De Oliveira
Manoel Cândido Pinto de Oliveira (; 11 December 1908 – 2 April 2015) was a Portuguese film director and screenwriter born in Cedofeita, Porto. He first began making films in 1927, when he and some friends attempted to make a film about World War I. In 1931 he completed his first film '' Douro, Faina Fluvial'', a documentary about his home city Porto made in the city symphony genre. He made his feature film debut in 1942 with '' Aniki-Bóbó'' and continued to make shorts and documentaries for the next 30 years, gaining a minimal amount of recognition without being considered a major world film director. In 1971, Oliveira directed his second feature narrative film, '' Past and Present'', a social satire that both set the standard for his film career afterwards and gained him recognition in the global film community.
