Conseil représentatif des institutions juives de France (CRIF) () is an umbrella organization of other groups representing the interests of History of the Jews in France, French Jews. Overview It is the official France, French affiliate of the World Jewish Congress (WJC), the world-wide umbrella organization of Jews, Jewish communities, and of the European Jewish Congress. It opposes antisemitism and antisemitic policies. It generally supports Zionism and the state of Israel, although in 2004 CRIF refuted Israeli Prime Minister of Israel, Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's characterization of antisemitism in France and his calls for French Jews to emigrate to Israel. On 20 November 2004, CRIF accused the French government of failing to protect citizens from broadcasts by Hezbollah's Al-Manar, al-Manar TV, which includes films that CRIF asserts are antisemitic and incite Muslims to attack Jews. The (, ), abbreviated CSA, was a French institution created in 1989 whose role was to regulate the various electronic media in France, such as radio and television. The creation of the (High Authority for Audiovisual Communication) was a measure founded in the Socialist Party (France), Socialist Party's electoral program of 1981, called 110 Propositions for France. The CSA replaced the (CNCL), which itself replaced the High Authority for Audiovisual Communication, created in 1982 to supervise the attribution of radio frequencies to the private radio sector, which was judged better than allowing the anarchic creation of the ("free radios"), mainly composed of amateurs and NGOs. Jean Kahn
Jean Salomon Kahn (17 May 1929 – 18 August 2013) was a French Jewish community leader, human rights activist, and lawyer. Kahn served as the President of the Representative Council of Jewish Institutions in France (CRIF) from 1989 to 1995, as well as the CRIF's vice president from 1983 to 1985. He later served as the President of the European Jewish Congress and the Vice President of the World Jewish Congress. Kahn also headed the Central Consistory of France from 1995 to 2008. Biography Kahn was born on 7 May 1929. He received a law degree from the University of Strasbourg and passed the bar in 1953. Kahn died on 18 August 2013 in Strasbourg, France, at the age of 84. Théo Klein (25 June 1920 – 28 January 2020) was a French lawyer who presided over the Conseil Représentatif des Institutions juives de France from 1983 to 1989. Klein was a Zionist and a French patriot. He advocated for secular values. He was sometimes critical of Israeli foreign policy and the nation's unconditional supporters. Early life Steg was born on 27 January 1925 in Czechoslovakia into a family of Orthodox Jews. His father, Mordechai Steg, born on 19 April 1895 in Bistra, Austria-Hungary, took his family to Paris in 1928. Mordechai had three children with his wife, Feige: Adolphe, Bitia, and Rachel.
