Alès
Alès () is a Communes of France, commune and Subprefectures in France, subprefecture in the Gard Departments of France, department in the Occitania (administrative region), Occitania Regions of France, region in Southern France. Until 1926, it was officially known as ''Alais''. Geography Alès lies north-northwest of Nîmes, on the left bank of the river Gardon d'Alès, which half surrounds it. It is located at the foot of the Cévennes, near the Cévennes National Park. Alès station has rail connections to Nîmes, Mende and Clermont-Ferrand. History Alès may be the modern successor of Arisitum, where, in about 570, Sigebert I, Sigebert, King of Austrasia, created a bishopric. In his campaign against the Visigoths, the Merovingian dynasty, Merovingian king Theudebert I (533–548) conquered part of the territory of the Diocese of Nîmes. Aimargues
Aimargues () is a Communes of France, commune in the Gard Departments of France, department in southern France. The town of Aimargues may have Roman origins and is situated beside the river Vidourle on the floodplain of the Rhône. Traditionally it has been an agricultural and wine-producing community but it now also has a number of new industries and employers who benefit from excellent road connections to the north of France as well as to Spain and Italy. Geography Located some to the southwest of Nîmes, close to the border with the Hérault department, Aimargues can be easily accessed from the nearby Autoroute A9. Aimargues station has rail connections to Nîmes and Le Grau-du-Roi. The Petite Camargue is an area of wetlands on the west side of the River delta, delta of the Rhône River in southern France. Aiguèze
Aiguèze (; ) is a commune in the Gard department in the Occitanie region of Southern France. Since 2005, Aiguèze has been a member of ''Les Plus Beaux Villages de France'' ("The most beautiful villages of France"), the first such location in Gard. Population Sights Aiguèze is a medieval village. The 14th century fort has a watchpath which provides fine views of the entrance to the Ardèche Gorges. The origins of the parish church are Romanesque; a Renaissance doorway was removed in the 19th century. The interior was restored at the beginning of the 20th century with decor donated in 1910 by the Archbishop of Rouen, primate of Normandy, a native of the village. The church has been a listed ''monument historique'' since 1993. Including the church, the commune has five sites recorded in the French Ministry of Culture list of historic sites. Aigues-Vives, Gard
Aigues-Vives (; ) is a commune in the Gard department in southern France. Population Education The Groupe scolaire Jean Macé has ''maternelle'' (preschool/nursery) and ''primaire'' (primary) levels. It opened in 1913. The ''collège'' (junior high school) serving the community is Collège de Gallargues-le-Montueux in Gallargues-le-Montueux. In addition to Aigues-Vives and Gallargues-le-Montueux, it also serves Aimargues. It opened in September 2014. it has about 600 students. Aigues-Mortes
Aigues-Mortes (; ) is a Communes of France, commune in the Gard Departments of France, department in the Occitania (administrative region), Occitania region of southern France. The medieval Ramparts of Aigues-Mortes, city walls surrounding the city are well preserved. Situated on the junction of the Canal du Rhône à Sète and the Chenal Maritime to Le Grau-du-Roi, the town is a transit center for canal craft and Dutch barges. Name The name "Aigues-Mortes" was attested in 1248 in the Latinized form ', which means "dead water", or "stagnant water". The name comes from the marshes and ponds that surround the village (which has never had drinking water, potable water). The inhabitants of the commune are known as ''Aigues-Mortais'' or ''Aigues-Mortaises'' in French.
