Common Council Of New York
The New York City Council is the lawmaking body of New York City in the United States. It has 51 members from 51 council districts throughout the five boroughs. The council serves as a check against the mayor in a mayor-council government model, the performance of city agencies' land use decisions, and legislating on a variety of other issues. It also has sole responsibility for approving the city budget. Members elected are limited to two consecutive four-year terms in office but may run again after a four-year respite. The head of the city council is called the speaker. The current speaker is Adrienne Adams, a Democrat from the 28th district in Queens. The speaker sets the agenda and presides at city council meetings, and all proposed legislation is submitted through the Speaker's Office. Adrienne Adams (politician)
Adrienne Eadie Adams (born December 9, 1960) is an American politician serving as Speaker of the New York City Council since 2022. A Democratic Party (United States), Democrat, Adams represents the New York City's 28th City Council district, 28th district. She is the first woman elected to the district, and the first African-American elected as Council Speaker. Adams was first elected to the City Council in 2017, to complete the term of her expelled predecessor, Ruben Wills. Her district includes the Queens borough neighborhoods of Jamaica, Queens, Jamaica, Rochdale Village, Queens, Rochdale Village, Richmond Hill, Queens, Richmond Hill and South Ozone Park. The boroughs of New York City are the five major governmental districts that comprise New York City. They are the Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens, and Staten Island. New York City's 1st City Council District
New York City's 1st City Council district is one of 51 districts in the New York City Council. It is currently represented by Democrat Christopher Marte, who took office in 2022. Geography District 1 is based in the farthest southern neighborhoods of Manhattan, covering the Financial District, Chinatown, Tribeca, SoHo, Battery Park City, Civic Center, Little Italy, NoHo, and part of the Lower East Side. Also in the district are Governors Island, Ellis Island, Liberty Island, Washington Square Park, City Hall, and the World Trade Center. A by-election, also known as a special election in the United States and the Philippines, or a bypoll in India, is an election used to fill an office that has become vacant between general elections. David Carr (politician)
David Carr (born August 28, 1987) is an American politician serving as Council Member for the 50th Council District of the New York City Council. He is a Republican, and the former Council Minority Leader. His district was formerly located only on Staten Island but now also encompasses part of Brooklyn. Life and career David Carr was born on Staten Island and is a lifelong resident of the Grasmere section of the borough. He attended local schools including the former St. John Villa Academy and Monsignor Farrell High School. Carr went on to earn a B.A. from Georgetown University. The speaker of a deliberative assembly, especially a legislative body, is its presiding officer, or the chair. The title was first used in 1377 in England. The speaker's official role is to moderate debate, make rulings on procedure, announce the results of votes, and the like.
