Broadcast history Although NBC had brought an end to the '' Mystery Movie'' series that ''Columbo'' had been a part of since 1971, the network decided to keep the series in production and ordered five new telefilms. The first two aired on Monday nights, the first on November 21, 1977, and the second on January 30, 1978. After that, the remaining three films were broadcast on Saturday nights beginning on February 25, 1978, and concluding with the final film of the original ''Columbo'' series on May 13, 1978. ''Columbo'' is an American crime drama television series starring Peter Falk as Columbo (character), Lieutenant Columbo, a homicide detective with the Los Angeles Police Department. After two pilot episodes in 1968 and 1971, the show originally aired on NBC from 1971 to 1978 as one of the rotating programs of ''The NBC Mystery Movie''. Tom Lazarus (born 1942) is an American screenwriter, director and producer. Patrick Wisdom O'Neal (September 26, 1927 – September 9, 1994) was an American actor and restaurateur. Early life O'Neal was born in Ocala, Florida, to Martha and Coke Wisdom O'Neal. He attended the Riverside Military Academy in Gainesville, Georgia, and Ocala High School. Upon graduation, he enrolled at the University of Florida in Gainesville where he majored in drama. During college, O'Neal joined the Florida Players, a theatre troupe. He was also a member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity and was the editor of the university yearbook. Early life and military career James McEachin was born in Rennert, North Carolina on May 20, 1930. McEachin served in the United States Army before, and then during, the Korean War. Serving in King Company, 9th Infantry Regiment (United States), 2nd Infantry Division, he was wounded (nearly fatally) in an ambush and nearly left for dead.
