The College of Letters and Science (L&S) is the largest of the 15 colleges at the University of California, Berkeley and encompasses the liberal arts. The college was established in its present state in 1915 with the merger of the College of Letters, the College of Social Science, and the College of Natural Science. As of the 2022-23 academic year, there were about 23,601 undergraduates and 2,417 graduate students enrolled in the college. The College of Letters and Science is the largest college of the University of California, Davis. In January 1922, to silence proposals from agricultural interests' to sever the University Farm at Davis from the University of California, Berkeley, the Regents of the University of California authorized a two-year undergraduate program at Davis. This initial project soon evolved into a four-year undergraduate program leading to the degree of bachelor of science in agriculture, which was first awarded at Davis in 1926. Several of the college's departments date back to 1922, when they were initially formed as "divisions". In other words, they were off-site divisions of departments of various colleges at Berkeley.
