Coffee production in Panama was occurring in the Boquete, Boquete Valley by the early 20th century, although coffee was growing wild all over the Pacific coast region of Panama by this time, when production did not match domestic consumption. The International Coffee Organization (ICO) has grouped mild ''Coffea arabica, arabica'' as the variety of coffee that is grown in Panama. The best quality of coffee in Panama is grown in Boquete. In the ''Coffee Review'' of 2008, two Panamanian coffees have received higher rating and fetched record prices than the coffee from Costa Rica. This is mainly due to the unprecedented success of the Geisha (coffee), Geisha varietal. This varietal originated from and arrived via Tanzania and Costa Rica in the 1960s in Panama. Hypothenemus Hampei
''Hypothenemus hampei'', the coffee berry borer, is a small beetle native to Africa. It is the most harmful insect pest of coffee worldwide. Spanish common names of the insect include ''barrenador del café'' (coffee borer), ''gorgojo del café'' (coffee weevil), and ''broca del café'' (coffee drill). Description The female ''Hypothenemus hampei'' have two larval stages, while the males only have one; each larval phase lasts 10 to 26 days. The adults are small black beetles with strong mandibles. The females can be anywhere from 1.4–1.8 millimeters long, with the males being slightly smaller at around 1.2–1.6 millimeters long. Female beetles can fly short distances, while the males cannot, as they have less developed wings compared to the females. ''Mycena citricolor'' is a species of mushroom-forming fungus in the family Mycenaceae. It is a plant pathogen producing leaf spots on coffee plants. This fungus causes the disease commonly known as American Leaf Spot. ''Mycena citricolor'' affects coffee plants, primarily in Latin America, but can grow on other plants as well. This fungus can grow on all parts of the coffee plant including the leaves, stems and fruits. When grown on the leaves, ''Mycena citricolor'' results in leaves with holes that often fall from the plant. Description The ''Mycena'' fungus can be identified growing on somewhat circular, brown spots on coffee leaves. The brown spots are caused by the presence of the parasitic fungus and by looking at the leaves closely, small mushrooms with luminescence can be seen. Ngäbe
The Ngäbe are an Indigenous people within the territories of present-day Panama and Costa Rica in Central America. The Ngäbe mostly live within the Ngäbe-Buglé comarca in the Western Panamanian provinces of Veraguas, Chiriquí and Bocas del Toro. They also have five Indigenous territories in southwestern Costa Rica, encompassing 23,600 hectares: Coto Brus, Abrojos Montezuma, Conte Burica, Altos de San Antonio and Guaymi de Osa. In the early 21st century, there are approximately 200,000-250,000 speakers of the Ngäbere language.
