Coaching Club Of New York
The Coaching Club (also known as The Coaching Club of New York, New York Coaching Club, and Coaching Club of America) was formed in New York City in 1875 to encourage four-in-hand driving in America. "Requisite for membership was the ability to handle a coach and four horses with a single group of reins." History Initiated by Colonels DeLancey Kane and William Jay, the club had its first official meeting at the Knickerbocker Club on Fifth Avenue on December 3, 1875. The Knickerbocker Club became its headquarters. Later some activities were moved nearer Central Park to the Metropolitan Club, nine members of which were founders of the Coaching Club. Activities There were regular events, dinners and annual parades through Central Park. Coaching Club American Oaks
The Coaching Club American Oaks is a race for thoroughbred three-year-old fillies and the second leg of the Triple Tiara of Thoroughbred Racing. Originally run at Belmont Park, the Grade I $500,000 stakes race was moved to Saratoga Race Course in 2010. Run as a handicap prior to 1928, the race is named in honor of the Coaching Club of New York. One of the requirements for membership in this club was the ability to handle a coach and four horses with a single group of reins. August Belmont Jr. set the original conditions in order to emulate The Oaks in England. From 1963 to 1967 the Coaching Club American Oaks was run at Aqueduct Racetrack. The Fairman Rogers Four-in-Hand
''The Fairman Rogers Four-in-Hand'' (originally titled ''A May Morning in the Park'') is an 1879–80 painting by the American painter Thomas Eakins. It shows Fairman Rogers driving a coaching party in his four-in-hand carriage through Philadelphia's Fairmount Park. It is thought to be the first painting to examine precisely, through systematic photographic analysis, how horses move. ''The Fairman Rogers Four-in-Hand'' is in the permanent collection of the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Rogers Eakins taught at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, where Rogers was a board member and chairman of the Committee on Instruction. Rogers recruited Eakins back to the academy in 1878 and commissioned the painting from his new instructor. A driving club was a 19th century membership club for the recreational practice of driving (horse), carriage driving. Early British driving clubs Benson Driving Club One of the first driving clubs was the Bensington Driving Club, founded in February 1807 at Benson, Oxfordshire, Bensington, Oxfordshire, also known as the Benson Driving Club when Bensington became Benson, and commonly referred to as "the B.D.C.". It was disbanded in 1854. The BDC initially met in the White Hart public house. Holland & Holland were a London firm of coachbuilders active over the century before the First World War. Their showroom was at 254 Oxford Street West and their works at 10, 25 to 27 and 45 North Row between Grosvenor Square and Oxford Street. Holland House was a New York City hotel located at 274–276 Fifth Avenue at the southwest corner of 30th Street in NoMad, Manhattan, New York City, with a frontage of on Fifth Avenue. The architects and designers were George Edward Harding & Gooch. A mercantile building by the 1920s, in the present day, it is a loft building. The Holland House opened in 1892. It was a large building of Indiana limestone, . Special interest was attached to it as it was a careful reproduction of Holland House of London. It contained the coat-of-arms of Henry Rich, the first Earl of Holland, with the decorations and historic features of the Kensington mansion.
