"Closer" is a song by New Zealand band Six60, released as the third single from their 2017 extended play ''Six60''. Background and composition The band members described "Closer" as "a feelgood song", where they spent time and effort taking a complex song and packaging it as simple. Lyrically, the song describes a man wanting to get physically closer to somebody at a party. Release and promotion "Closer" was one of six tracks released weekly in the build-up to their ''Six60'' EP, on 27 October 2017. Six60
Six60 are a New Zealand pop rock band formed in Dunedin, Otago in 2008. The band consists of Matiu Walters (lead vocals, guitar), Ji Fraser (lead guitar), Chris Mac (bass guitar), Marlon Gerbes (synthesiser), Hoani Matenga (bass guitar) and Eli Paewai (drums). Their self-titled debut album was released on 10 October 2011 on their own label Massive Entertainment. The album was produced and mixed by Tiki Taane and debuted at number one in the New Zealand charts and was certified gold within its first week of release. Their first two singles "Rise Up 2.0" and " Don't Forget Your Roots" reached number one and number two respectively on the RIANZ singles chart and were both certified double and triple platinum. "Don't Give It Up" is a song by New Zealand band Six60, released as the lead single from their 2017 extended play '' Six60''. Background and composition The song was the first that Six60 recorded for the ''Six60'' EP sessions. The song was created by Six60 as a way to play with space, and to use silence as an instrument. The song was sonically inspired by the "sophisticated simplicity" of musicians such as Bob Marley, Queen and the Beatles, and began as a piano demo performed by Marlon Gerbes, that the band stripped back to the most basic aspects. Lyrically, the band wanted to create an ambiguous song where listeners could put their own voice and experiences into the track, such as social media-related anxiety and other "unique challenges" faced at the time. The release was a wide-scale commercial success in New Zealand, debuting at number two on the New Zealand albums chart, and being one of the top-performing releases in New Zealand between 2017 and 2021. Production The album was recorded at HQ, the band's newly created studio in Auckland, New Zealand.
