Classic Tracks (Rick Wakeman Album)
''Classic Tracks'' is a progressive rock album of re-makes of classic Rick Wakeman songs. It features Wakeman and four American musicians. Despite the good reviews by fans, Wakeman claims this album was finished and released without his authorization. He also claims that he was threatened with violence if he interfered with the release and was told he wouldn't receive any compensation for it. In this album, lyrics were added to the 1975 instrumental song "Merlin the Magician" from ''The Myths and Legends of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table''. Despite Rick's feelings about this album, this new version of "Merlin the Magician" was later played on tour and one of those performances can be seen on the "Live in Buenos Aires" DVD. Although ''Journey to the Centre of the Earth'' was a song from 1974, this was the first time it was recorded in the studio. This version however is very different from the original. Rick Wakeman
Richard Christopher Wakeman (born 18 May 1949) is an English keyboardist and composer best known as a member of the progressive rock band Yes across five tenures between 1971 and 2004, and for his prolific solo career. AllMusic describes Wakeman as a "classically trained keyboardist extraordinaire who plied his trade with Yes and developed his own brand of live spectacular in a solo act." Born and raised in West London, Wakeman quit his studies at the Royal College of Music in 1969 to become a full-time session musician. His early sessions included " Space Oddity", among other tracks, for David Bowie, and songs by Elton John, Marc Bolan, Cat Stevens, and Lou Reed. In 1970, Wakeman joined the folk rock group the Strawbs, during which his virtuosity gained national press coverage. Progressive Rock
Progressive rock (shortened as prog rock or simply prog) is a broad genre of rock music that primarily developed in the United Kingdom through the mid- to late 1960s, peaking in the early-to-mid-1970s. Initially termed " progressive pop", the style emerged from psychedelic bands who abandoned standard pop or rock traditions in favour of instrumental and compositional techniques more commonly associated with jazz, folk, or classical music, while retaining the instrumentation typical of rock music. ''The Myths and Legends of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table'' is the third studio album and fourth overall by English keyboardist Rick Wakeman. Released on 27 March 1975 by A&M Records, it is a progressive rock concept album based on the stories and people of the King Arthur legend. It developed in the summer of 1974 while Wakeman was in hospital recovering from a heart attack, and started to write music for it on paper and a cassette recorder. Recording took place during his debut world tour promoting ''Journey to the Centre of the Earth'' (1974), and performed some of the album live in Japan, Australia, and New Zealand in early 1975 prior to its release. Wakeman performs with his five-piece band named the English Rock Ensemble, the New World Orchestra, and the English Chamber Choir conducted by David Measham.
