Claghorn and Cunningham Range is a historic range of buildings in Savannah, Georgia, United States. Located in Savannah's Historic District, the addresses of some of the properties are East Bay Street, above Factors Walk, while others solely utilize the former King Cotton warehouses on River Street. As of February 2022, the businesses occupying the ground floor of the River Street elevation are True Grits and Wet Willie's. The building's construction, completed in 1857 in tandem with the adjacent (to the east) Jones and Derenne Range, is attributed to Charles Sholl and Calvin Fay. Sholl & Fay was the architectural firm of Charles Sholl and Calvin Fay which was active in the 19th century. The partnership existed between 1852 and 1857. They were responsible for the renovations of the City Exchange, Savannah Medical College and several Italianate buildings in Savannah, Georgia, where they were based.''Lost Savannah: Photographs from the Collection of the Georgia Historical Society'', Luciana M. River Street is a commercial street and promenade in Savannah, Georgia, United States. It runs along the southern edge of the Savannah River for , from the merging of North and East Lathrop Avenues in the west to East Bay Street in the east. Its most well-known section runs from the Talmadge Memorial Bridge, then below City Hall and Yamacraw Bluff, to its eastern terminus. It is West River Street up to where the Hyatt Regency Savannah spans it. It is here, around below Bay Street, that it becomes East River Street. Chandlery
A chandlery was originally the office in a wealthy medieval household responsible for wax and candles, as well as the room in which the candles were kept. It could be headed by a chandler. The office was subordinated to the kitchen, and only existed as a separate office in larger households. Whether a separate office or not, the function was naturally an important one, in a time before electric light, and when production of candles was often done privately. It was closely connected with other offices of the household, such as the ewery and the scullery. While this usage is obsolete today, the term can refer to a candle business. The current meaning of "chandler" is a person who sells candles. By the 18th century, most commercial chandlers dealt in candles, oils, soap, and even paint. Savannah Cotton Exchange
The Savannah Cotton Exchange was established in 1876 in Savannah, Georgia, United States. Its function was to provide King Cotton factors, brokers serving planters' interest in the market, a place to congregate and set the market value of cotton exported to larger markets such as New York, New York, New York City or London, England, London. By the end of the 19th century, factorage was on the decline as more planters were selling their products at interior markets, thus merely shipping them from Savannah via the extensive railroad, rail connections between the city and the interior. The ''Savannah Morning News'' is a daily newspaper in Savannah, Georgia. It is published by Gannett. The motto of the paper is "Light of the Coastal Empire and Lowcountry". The paper serves Savannah, its metropolitan area, and parts of South Carolina. History William Tappan Thompson, author of the ''Major Jones'' series of humorous stories, along with John McKinney Cooper as publisher and owner, founded the paper on January 15, 1850 as the ''Daily Morning News''.
