Claes I Van Borselen
Nicolas, Claes or Klaas van Borselen was a younger son of Wolfert I van Borselen. He founded the Van Borselen branch later known as Van Brigdamme. Family A younger son Claes was the fifth surviving son of Wolfert I van Borselen and his wife Sibilie. He was probably named after his great-grandfather Nicolas van Borselen. Unlike the other Van Borselens, this makes it easy to identify Claes. It is only in 1341 that a namesake, the child Claes son of Raas appears. Zeeland inheritance laws The County of Zeeland had different feudal inheritance laws than most other parts of the later Netherlands. Here all sons had an equal right to their parents' inheritance, instead of only the oldest son succeeding. Also, almost all the fiefs of Zeeland could only be inherited by sons, not by daughters, brothers, parents etc. This might explain why inherited fiefs often remained undivided for years. Wolfert I Van Borselen
Wolfert I van Borselen (c. 1245 – 1299) was lord of Zandenburg and Polsbroek and regent for John I, Count of Holland. Family Wolfert I van Borselen was born in about 1250 to and (according to some) Maria van Egmond. Ellewoutsdijk
Ellewoutsdijk ( zea, Ellesdiek) is a village in the Dutch province of Zeeland. It is a part of the municipality of Borsele, and lies about 18 km east of Vlissingen. History The village was first mentioned in 1216 as Elewoldesdike, and means "dike of Elewold (person)". Ellewoutsdijk developed in the 11th century on a ridge on the former island of Borssele. A creek used to extend to the market square, but has silted up. A church was known to be located on a ''terp'' (artificial hill) since 1216. The medieval church was destroyed in 1944 by war. Between 1948 and 1951, the current Dutch Reformed church was built on the foundations of its predecessor. It is an aisleless church with a wide tower. Sint-Maartensdijk Castle
Sint-Maartensdijk Castle was a castle with a rich history. Except for a part of the moats nothing remains of it. Location and name The village Sint-Maartensdijk is located in the Oudelandpolder on the island Tholen. This is the oldest polder west of the Pluimpot, which is the old trench that used to split Tholen in two. The old map of Tholen shows Sint-Maartensdijk, the Oudelandpolder and the Pluimpot just southwest of its center. The Pluimpot used to be named Borden. Therefore, the oldest name of the area around Sint-Maartensdijk was Overbordene, meaning 'Over the Borden'. The village of Sint-Maartensdijk was previously named Haestinge. Some say this referred to a hare which is also on the old coat of arms of the village. Others say that Haestinge comes from 'Haast-Ee', another old name for the Pluimpot. Sint-Maartensdijk is a village in the Dutch province of Zeeland. It is a part of the municipality of Tholen, and lies about 16 km west of Bergen op Zoom. History Sint-Maartensdijk was founded as 'Haestinge', and renamed when it got a church dedicated to Martin of Tours. The first lords of Sint-Maartensdijk resided at Sint-Maartensdijk Castle which was demolished in 1819. The castle was located just north of the town walls, and its southern moat is still visible. Floris I Van Borselen
Floris I van Borselen was lord of Sint-Maartensdijk and Sint-Maartensdijk Castle, the count's lieutenant in Zeeland and keeper of the seal of Holland. Context Family Floris was the fourth son of Claes I van Borselen (a.k.a. Nicolas), and Joan van Zevenbergen. He was also a grandson of Wolfert I van Borselen. As his father Claes was the fourth surviving son of Wolfert I, one might expect that Floris would not get a rich inheritance. However, in the end Floris did leave a very rich estate, probably due to his career in the service of the counts of Holland. The Hook and Cod Wars During the Hook and Cod wars, Knight Claes I van Borselen and his sons pledged loyalty to Margaret II, Countess of Hainaut in January 1351. William I, Duke of Bavaria- Straubing (Frankfurt am Main, 1330–1389, Le Quesnoy), was the second son of Emperor Louis IV and Margaret II of Hainaut. Battle Of Veere
The Battle of Veere was a small naval battle that took place in late May 1351 during the Hook and Cod wars. Context Just like the County of Holland, the County of Zeeland had been very restive after the death of the last male Avesnes count William IV of Holland and Zeeland. In 1349-1350 William of Bavaria attempted to become count of Holland and Zeeland without keeping the conditions his mother Margaret, Countess of Hainaut had demanded. In April 1350 William went to Hainaut and submitted to his mother, and that seemed the end of William's rule. However, in August 1350 an assassination led to open rebellion. Delft, a number of other cities north of the Hollandse IJssel and some nobles formed an alliance later known as the Cod faction. Hook And Cod Wars
The Hook and Cod wars ( nl, Hoekse en Kabeljauwse twisten) comprise a series of wars and battles in the County of Holland between 1350 and 1490. Most of these wars were fought over the title of count of Holland, but some have argued that the underlying reason was because of the power struggle of the bourgeois in the cities against the ruling nobility. The Cod faction generally consisted of the more progressive cities of Holland. The Hook faction consisted for a large part of the conservative noblemen. The origin of the name "Cod" is uncertain, but is most likely a case of reappropriation. Perhaps it derives from the arms of Bavaria, that look like the scales of a fish. The ''Hook'' refers to the hooked stick that is used to catch cod. Another possible explanation is that as a cod grows it tends to eat more, growing even bigger and eating even more, thus encapsulating how the noblemen perhaps saw the expanding middle classes of the time.
