The Civil and Public Services Union (CPSU) was an Republic of Ireland, Irish trade union for clerical and administrative grades in the civil service, the wider public sector and the private sector.John B. The Irish Congress of Trade Unions (often abbreviated to just Congress or ICTU), formed in 1959 by the merger of the Irish Trades Union Congress (founded in 1894) and the Congress of Irish Unions (founded in 1945), is a national trade union centre, the umbrella organization, umbrella organisation to which trade unions in both the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland affiliate. The Civil and Public Services Association (CPSA) was a trade union in the United Kingdom, representing civil servants. History The union was founded in 1921, when the Civil Service Clerical Union and the Clerical Officers' Association merged to form the Civil Service Clerical Association (CSCA). It affiliated with the Trades Union Congress (TUC) and the Labour Party and had around 16,000 members. Its Dublin branch left the following year, to form the Civil and Public Services Union. Following the 1926 United Kingdom general strike, the Trade Disputes and Trade Unions Act 1927 was passed, requiring government employees to disaffiliate from political parties and trades union confederations, compelling the union to leave the Labour Party and the TUC. The Public Service Executive Union (PSEU) was a trade union representing civil servants in Ireland. The union originated in 1890, when a Dublin branch of the Second Division Civil Servants' Association was founded. In 1918, it became the independent Association of Executive Officers of the Civil Service In 1931, it was renamed as the Civil Service Executive and Higher Officers' Association. Archie Heron
Archibald Heron (29 August 1896 – 10 May 1971) was an Irish Labour Party politician and trade unionist. He was born in Portadown, County Armagh, to a presbyterian family, one of seven children of Samuel Heron, a physician and surgeon, and his wife Bessie (née Beck). He was educated locally before moving to Belfast in 1912. He joined the Irish Republican Brotherhood, and moved to Dublin in 1912 where he became involved in the Irish Transport and General Workers' Union. During the Irish War of Independence he served as a bodyguard for Michael Collins From 1928 to 1941, he served as general secretary of the Civil and Public Services Union. In the 1937 general election, he was elected to Dáil Éireann as a Labour Party Teachta Dála (TD) for the Dublin North-West constituency. He lost his seat at the 1938 general election.
