The City of Whittlesea is a local government area located in the outer northern suburbs of Melbourne, the state capital of Victoria, Australia. The city covers an area of , and in June 2023, it had an estimated population of 245,029 and is one of Victoria's fastest growing Municipalities. History What became the City of Whittlesea had its origins in two separate roads districts (an early, single-purpose form of local government). The first, Whittlesea Roads District, was incorporated on 12 December 1862. On 1 January 1875 it was amalgamated with the Merriang riding of the Shire of Darebin to create the Shire of Whittlesea. The second, Epping Roads District, was incorporated on 21 July 1870. It was then enlarged on 11 January 1859 and then again on 25 July 1864 to cover the Northcote area. Somerton is a suburb in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, north of Melbourne's Central Business District, located within the City of Hume local government area. Kinglake West, Victoria
Kinglake West is a town in Victoria, Australia, north-east of Melbourne's Central Business District, located within the City of Whittlesea and the Shires of Murrindindi and Nillumbik local government areas. Kinglake West recorded a population of 1,305 at the 2021 census. The town was substantially damaged in the 2009 Black Saturday bushfires, including 10 fatalities. History Kinglake West is situated north-east of Whittlesea in the Kinglake Ranges, part of the Great Dividing Range. Only Kinglake West is in the City of Whittlesea. Arthurs Creek is a locality in Victoria, Australia, 33 kilometres north-east of Melbourne's Central Business District, located within the Shire of Nillumbik local government area. Arthurs Creek recorded a population of 478 at the . It is named after Henry Arthur, a member of John Batman's Port Phillip Association and nephew of George Arthur, a governor of Tasmania. Doreen is a suburb in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, north-east of Melbourne's Central Business District, located within the City of Whittlesea and Shire of Nillumbik local government areas. Doreen recorded a population of 27,122 at the 2021 census. Patrick Reid settled the area in 1844, calling it "Hazel Glen". The Post Office opened on 8 December 1870 as Hazelglen, and was renamed Doreen in 1895. The area has a community hall and a Country Fire Authority fire station. History Doreen was initially established by Europeans in the year 1844. One of these early settlers was Patrick Reid. Reid had a holding over the land, calling the area "Hazel Glen". History Broadmeadows was first incorporated as a road district on 27 November 1857. It became a shire on 27 January 1871.
