City Of Seattle (steamship)
The ''City of Seattle'' was a Passenger ship, passenger steamship built in 1890 in Philadelphia, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The ''City of Seattle'' operated out of Puget Sound from 1890 to 1921, during which it ran routes between the local ports as well as Alaska, notably transporting prospectors during the Klondike Gold Rush. In 1921, the ''City of Seattle'' returned to the East Coast where it ran routes in both New York and Florida. In 1937, the ''City of Seattle'' returned to Philadelphia to be scrapped. Neafie, Levy & Co., commonly known as Neafie & Levy, was a Philadelphia, Pennsylvania shipbuilding and engineering firm that existed from the middle of the 19th to the beginning of the 20th century. Described as America's "first specialist marine engineers", Neafie & Levy was probably the first company in the United States to combine the building of iron ships with the manufacture of steam engines to power them.Tyler, p. 7. Clyde Steamship Company was a steamship transportation company connecting New York City to Florida as well as routes to Boston and Providence, Cuba, New Orleans, and various Keys. William P. Clyde organized the company in 1874 and acquired various ships including the steamboat ''Beverly'', ''Bristol'', ''Philadelphia'', ''Alliance'', ''A.C. Stimers'' (likely named for Alban C. Stimers), ''May Flower'', ''Ann Eliza'' (perhaps named for Ann Eliza Young) and the canal boats ''City of Buffalo'' and ''Catherine Moan''. In 1882 it had sailings along the west coast of Florida, to New Orleans, down to Key West and Havana. Pacific-Alaska Navigation Company
The Pacific-Alaska Navigation Company was an American passenger and freight ocean shipping company that operated between 1912 and 1916 on the West Coast of North America. It was formed as a holding company during the merger of the Alaska Pacific Steamship Company and the Alaska Coast Company. During its four years of life, its fleet became known as the Admiral Line because its ships (for example, the ) were usually named for former U.S. Navy admirals. The Pacific Coast Steamship Company was an important early shipping company that operated steamships on the west coast of North America. It was first organized in 1867 under the name Goodall, Nelson and Perkins. Pioneer Square Totem Pole
The Pioneer Square totem pole, also referred to as the Seattle totem pole and historically as the Chief-of-All-Women pole, is a Tlingit totem pole located in Pioneer Square in downtown Seattle, Washington. The original totem pole was carved in 1790 and raised in the Tlingit village on Tongass Island, Alaska to honor the Tlingit woman Chief-of-All-Women. The totem pole was later stolen by Seattle businessmen on an expedition to Alaska and subsequently gifted to the City of Seattle in 1899, where it was raised in Pioneer Square and became a source of civic pride.
