City Of Port Augusta
The City of Port Augusta is a local government area located at the northern end of Spencer Gulf in South Australia. It is centred on the town of Port Augusta. History The Port Augusta region is a natural crossroads and aborigines have been trading in the area for 40 000 years. European settlement began in the 1840s. The town grew from a pastoral service centre to a railway town with the construction of the overland telegraph line. Port Augusta's rail importance grew with the start of the railways towards Alice Springs and Kalgoorlie. The municipality was created as the Corporate Town of Port Augusta on 3 November 1875. A number of smaller separate municipalities were proclaimed in the Port Augusta area, including the Corporate Town of Davenport (August 1887), the Corporate Town of Port Augusta West (October 1887), and the District Council of Davenport (January 1888, later called Woolundunga). __NOTOC__ Davenport is a suburb in the Australian state of South Australia located about north of the state capital of Adelaide and about north-east of the municipal seat in Port Augusta. The suburb was created on 8 July 2014 on land excluded from the existing suburbs of Port Augusta and Wami Kata. This followed a request from the Davenport Community Council, the organisation representing the aboriginal community residing there. It is located within the cadastral unit of the Hundred of Davenport. The names of private roads and the numbering of property within the suburb were approved by the council meeting of the City of Port Augusta held on 27 October 2014. Northern Power Station (South Australia)
Northern Power Station was located at Port Paterson, South Australia about south of the city centre of Port Augusta. It was coal powered with two 260 MW steam turbines that generated a total of 520 MW of electricity. It was operated and maintained by Alinta Energy and was commissioned in 1985. Northern received coal by rail from the Telford Cut coal mine, to the north. The plant ceased electricity production in May 2016 and decommissioned and demolished over the following few years. In 2024, Peter Dutton said he intends, if elected, to build one of seven government-owned nuclear power plants on this site, to be operational by 2035–2037. Leigh Creek, South Australia
Leigh Creek is a former coal-mining town in eastern central South Australia. At the 2016 census, Leigh Creek had a population of 245, a 55% decrease from 550 in the previous census in 2011. Situated to the west of the northern Flinders Ranges, the current town is 13 km further south than the original town—it was moved in 1982 to allow for the expansion of the mine. Port Augusta Town Hall
The Port Augusta Town Hall is a heritage-listed former town hall at 54 Commercial Road, Port Augusta, South Australia, Port Augusta. It was Port Augusta's seat of local government from 1887 to 1983. History The town hall was built in 1886-87, to a design by Alfred Barham Black and H. E. Hughes. An earlier design by James Hill was condemned by architects. The design featured a large central auditorium, 75 feet by 45 feet with a stage. It was built by R. Honey, from stone quarried at Quorn, South Australia, Quorn. The foundation stone was laid in June 1886 by the wife of the mayor, J. C. Knipe. It was opened in May 1887 by Knipe's successor as mayor, David Drysdale.
