Citrine (colour)
Citrine is a colour, the most common reference for which is certain coloured varieties of quartz which are a medium deep shade of golden yellow. Citrine has been summarized at various times as yellow, greenish-yellow, brownish yellow or orange. The original reference point for the citrine colour was the citron fruit. The first recorded use of ''citrine'' as a colour in English was in 1386. It was borrowed from a medieval Latin and classical Latin word with the same meaning. Citrine (quartz)
Citrine is a transparent, yellow variety of quartz. Its name is derived from the Latin word ''citrus'' (citron tree), by way of the French ''citrin'' or ''citron'' (lemon). Citrine is one of the most popular yellow gemstones. It is sometimes used as a modern, more affordable alternative to the traditional November birthstone, topaz. Not every yellow quartz is considered citrine, and there is disagreement as to when the name "citrine" is appropriately used. However, quartz stained by iron inclusions or coatings is generally not considered citrine. Natural citrine is rare; most commercially available citrine is produced by heating amethyst or smoky quartz. Natural citrine tends to have a pale yellow, often smoky color, while heat-treated amethyst is typically a deeper yellow, orange, red, or even brown ("burnt amethyst"). Baron Citrine, of Wembley in the County of Middlesex, was a title in the Peerage of the United Kingdom. It was created in 1946 for the prominent trade unionist Sir Walter Citrine. ''Humboldt's Gift'' is a 1975 novel by Canadian-American author Saul Bellow. It won the 1976 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction and contributed to Bellow's winning the Nobel Prize in Literature the same year. Plot The novel, which Bellow initially intended to be a short story, is a ''roman à clef'' about Bellow's friendship with the poet Delmore Schwartz. It explores the changing relationship of art and power in a materialist America. This theme is addressed through the contrasting careers of two writers, Von Humboldt Fleisher (to some degree a version of Schwartz) and his protégé Charlie Citrine (to some degree a version of Bellow himself).
