Chushka (rural Locality)
Chushka () is an abandoned village on the Chushka Spit in Zaporozhskoye Rural Settlement of Temryuksky District, in Krasnodar Krai, Russia. It is located beside Port Kavkaz, which includes the Kerch Strait ferry terminal, near the end of the spit. History Prior to World War 2, catching and processing fish was the economic activity on the spit. The only buildings were the lighthouse keeper's house and temporary shelters for fishermen. After the Nazi Germans were driven from the Kuban bridgehead on the Taman Peninsula, the Soviets started building the Kerch railway bridge here in 1944, and the Chushka settlement was established for workers. The bridge opened, but was not fully completed, and was soon damaged by storms and ice, and was dismantled. At one time, six thousand people lived here, according to anecdote, and there was a maternity hospital, a clinic and a school. Chushka Spit
__NOTOC__ Chushka Spit () is a sandy spit in the northern part of the Strait of Kerch. It extends from Cape Achilleion and the town of to the south-west in the direction of the Black Sea for almost . Administratively, it belongs to Temryuksky District, Krasnodar Krai, Russia. Geography The Chushka Spit forms the northern shore of Taman Bay; the southern shore was formerly the Tuzla Spit. It has many long branches extending to the south. In 1914 a lighthouse with a fixed red light at a height of was constructed. A railway line and a highway run along the spit to Port Kavkaz, at the locality of Chushka, towards the end of the spit. As well as freight being shipped through the port, it is the terminal of the Kerch Strait ferry line connecting the Taman Peninsula with Crimea. Port Kavkaz
Port Kavkaz () is a small harbour on the Chushka Spit in Krasnodar Krai, Russia, on the eastern side of Kerch Strait. It is adjacent to the village of Chushka (rural locality), Chushka, which is now largely deserted due to the toxic effects of the port. The port is able to handle vessels up to in length, in breadth and with draft up to . It was the eastern terminal of the railroad and car Kerch Strait ferry line connecting Krasnodar Krai with Crimea (the western terminal of the ferry line is Port Krym). Kerch Strait Ferry Line
The Kerch Strait ferry line (, ) was a ferry connection across the Strait of Kerch that connected the Crimean Peninsula and Krasnodar Krai. The ferry ran across the narrowest part of the strait (about ) between Port Krym (harbour Crimea) by the city of Kerch and Port Kavkaz (harbour Caucasus) on the Chushka Spit, on the site of the former Kerch railway bridge. It carried passengers, automotive and railroad transport. The ferry was on the European route E97 and connected its parts, А290 (formerly M25) and М-17 highways. After the 2014 Russian annexation of Crimea, ferry traffic peaked, but as the Crimean Bridge across the strait opened in 2018–2020, it overtook the traffic flow from the ferry, rendering its usage for transportation financially unfeasible (there is no toll involved for the use of the bridge), and the ferry line stopped operations in late 2020. Kuban Bridgehead
The Kuban Bridgehead (), also known as the "Goth's head position" (), was a German military position on the Taman Peninsula, Russia, between the Sea of Azov and the Black Sea. Existing from January to October 1943, the bridgehead formed after the Germans were pushed out of the Caucasus. The heavily fortified position was intended as a staging area for the ''Wehrmacht'' which was to be used to renew attacks towards the oil wells of the Caucasus. Axis positions in the bridgehead were repeatedly subjected to large Soviet offensives, but none ever comprehensively broke the Axis defensive lines. The bridgehead was abandoned when the Red Army breached the Panther–Wotan line, forcing an evacuation of the German forces across the Kerch Strait to Crimea.
