''Christmas on Death Row'' is a Christmas compilation album by Death Row Records and Interscope Records on December 3, 1996. The album, Death Row's only Christmas-themed release, was made as a form of charity to the community. Production was handled by Kevyn Lewis, Danny Boy, Sean "Barney" Thomas, Daz Dillinger, Operation From The Bottom, Reggie Lamb, Roman Johnson and Snoop Doggy Dogg, with Suge Knight serving as executive producer. It features contributions from Danny Boy, Guesss, Six Feet Deep, B.G.O.T.I., Nate Dogg, Tha Dogg Pound, 816, Bad Azz, Big Tray Deee, J-Flexx, Michel'le, O.F.T.B., Sean "Barney" Thomas and Snoop Dogg. "The Christmas Song" (commonly subtitled "Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire" or, as it was originally subtitled, "Merry Christmas to You") is a Christmas song written in 1945 by Robert Wells (songwriter), Robert Wells and Mel Tormé. The Nat King Cole Trio first recorded the song in June 1946. At Cole's behestand over the objections of his label, Capitol Recordsa second recording was made in August utilizing a small string section. This version became a massive hit on both the Pop music, pop and R&B charts. Cole again recorded the song in 1953, using the same arrangement with a full orchestra arranged and conducted by Nelson Riddle, and once more in 1961, in a stereophonic version with another full orchestra arranged and conducted by Ralph Carmichael. Isaac Lee Hayes Jr. (August 20, 1942 – August 10, 2008) was an American singer, songwriter, composer, and actor. J-Flexx is an American former rapper and producer of Death Row Records. Career J-Flexx ghostwrote lyrics for Dr. Dre during his tenure at Death Row Records. The first song he co-wrote in that collaboration, " Natural Born Killaz", became a Top 40 hit for Dre and Ice Cube in 1994 (Murder Was the Case Soundtrack). Tha Dogg Pound is an American hip-hop duo composed of West Coast rappers Kurupt and Daz Dillinger. They were among the first acts to sign to Death Row Records in 1992. Kurupt and Daz went on to release solo albums starting in 1998; they left the crumbling Death Row Records following year. Daz left due to long-lasting internal struggles on the label after friend and labelmate Tupac Shakur's Murder of Tupac Shakur, murder in 1996.
