Christianity is the largest religion in Australia, with a total of 43.9% of the nation-wide population identifying with a Christian denomination in the 2021 census. The first presence of Christianity in Australia began with British colonisation in what came to be known as New South Wales in 1788. The Christian footprint in Australian society and culture remains broad, particularly in areas of social welfare and education provision and in the marking of festivals such as Easter and Christmas. Though the Australian Constitution of 1901 protects freedom of religion and separation of church and state, the Church of England held legal privileges in the early British colonial period, when Catholicism in particular was suppressed. Sectarianism was a feature of Australian politics well into the 20th century, as was collaboration by church and state in seeking the conversion of the Indigenous population to Christianity. John Flynn (minister)
John Flynn (25 November 18805 May 1951) was an Australian Presbyterian minister who founded the Australian Inland Mission (AIM) which later separated into Frontier Services and the Presbyterian Inland Mission, as well as founding what became the Royal Flying Doctor Service, the world's first air ambulance. Early life Flynn was born at Moliagul, central Victoria on 25 November, 1880. The third child of Thomas and Rosetta Flynn, John was raised in Sydney by his mother's sister after his mother died during childbirth. When he was five, John was reunited with his family at Snake Gully, near Ballarat. The Flynn family later moved to Sunshine in Melbourne's western suburbs. Educated at Snake Valley, Sunshine and Braybrook primary schools, he matriculated from University High School in Parkville in Melbourne, aged 18. Philip Leslie Freier (born 9 February 1955) is an Australian Anglican bishop. He was the 13th Anglican Diocese of Melbourne, Archbishop of Melbourne from 2006 until his retirement in 2025. He was Anglican Primate of Australia, Primate of Australia from June 2014 until March 2020. Previously, he served as Anglican Diocese of the Northern Territory, Bishop of the Northern Territory between 1999 and 2006. John Dickson (born 1967) is an Australian author, Anglican cleric and historian of the ancient world, largely focusing on early Christianity and Judaism. Since 2022, he has been a professor at the graduate school of Wheaton College in the United States. Since 2019 he has hosted the Undeceptions podcast. Early life Dickson was educated at Mosman High School, Sydney, and grew up in what he describes as "a typical Aussie home". His family was not religious and rarely discussed spiritual matters. Dickson recalls that he had "never been inside a church before he was sixteen". On 12 October 1976, Dickson's father died in the Indian Airlines Flight 171 disaster at Bombay Airport.
