''Christ the Gardener'' is an oil on canvas painting by Édouard Manet, executed from 1856 to 1859, one of his few religious works. It shows the risen Christ in the Noli me tangere episode, although unusually Mary Magdalene is not shown. It is now in a private collection. Édouard Manet
Édouard Manet (, ; ; 23 January 1832 – 30 April 1883) was a French Modernism, modernist painter. He was one of the first 19th-century artists to paint modern life, as well as a pivotal figure in the transition from Realism (art movement), Realism to Impressionism. Born into an upper-class household with strong political connections, Manet rejected the naval career originally envisioned for him; he became engrossed in the world of painting. His early masterworks, Le Déjeuner sur l'herbe, ''The Luncheon on the Grass'' (''Le déjeuner sur l'herbe'') and ''Olympia (Manet), Olympia'', premiering in 1863 and '65, respectively, caused great controversy with both critics and the Academy of Fine Arts, but soon were praised by progressive artists as the breakthrough acts to the new style, Impressionism. Mary Magdalene (sometimes called Mary of Magdala, or simply the Magdalene or the Madeleine) was a woman who, according to the four canonical gospels, traveled with Jesus as one of his followers and was a witness to crucifixion of Jesus, his crucifixion and Resurrection of Jesus, resurrection.
