Christ Crowned With Thorns (Bosch, London)
''Christ Crowned with Thorns'', sometimes known as ''Christ Mocked'', is an oil on panel painting by Hieronymus Bosch. It is held in the National Gallery in London, which dates it to around 1510, though some art historians prefer earlier dates. Another painting of the same subject in Bosch's style but with a different composition is held by the El Escorial near Madrid, '' Christ Crowned with Thorns''; this is now usually attributed to a follower. Other paintings similar to the London version by followers of Bosch are held in several public collections, including in particular in the Koninklijk Museum in Antwerp, but also examples in the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and the Kunstmuseum Bern,De doornenkroning van ChristusDe doornenkroning van Christus met stichtersportret

Christ Crowned With Thorns (Bosch, El Escorial)
''Christ Crowned with Thorns'' is an oil on panel painting made in the 1530s by a follower of Hieronymus Bosch. It is now in the Monasterio de San Lorenzo at El Escorial, near Madrid, in Spain. The work is painted on a rectangular oak panel and measures . The main scene is set in a circular tondo with a gold background, surrounded by a grisaille painting of a battle between angels and demons. It is an elaborated version of another Bosch's composition of the same subject, '' Christ Crowned with Thorns'', held by the National Gallery, London, combining two events from Biblical account of the Passion of Jesus: the Mocking of Jesus and the Crowning with Thorns. As with the London version, this composition is centred on a half-length Jesus with a calm expression, accompanied by several other men, in this case, five others. The man to the far left, with a sceptre depicting Moses, is often identified as the High Priest Caiaphas, with the four others around Jesus interpreted as men ...

Crown Of Thorns
According to the New Testament, a woven crown of thorns ( or grc, ἀκάνθινος στέφανος, akanthinos stephanos, label=none) was placed on the head of Jesus during the events leading up to his crucifixion. It was one of the instruments of the Passion, employed by Jesus' captors both to cause him pain and to mock his claim of authority. It is mentioned in the gospels of Matthew (Matthew 27:29), Mark (Mark 15:17) and John (John 19:2, 19:5), and is often alluded to by the early Church Fathers, such as Clement of Alexandria, Origen and others, along with being referenced in the apocryphal Gospel of Peter. Since at least around the year 400 AD, a relic believed by many to be the crown of thorns has been venerated. In 1238, the Latin Emperor Baldwin II of Constantinople yielded the relic to French King Louis IX. It was kept in the Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris until 15 April 2019, when it was rescued from a fire and moved to the Louvre Museum. As a reli ...
