Chorus (musical Theatre)
In musical theatre, the ensemble or chorus are the on-stage performers other than the featured players. Ensemble members typically do not play named characters and have few or no spoken lines or Solo (music), solo parts; rather, they sing and dance in unison. An ensemble member may play multiple roles through the course of a show. Origin The modern musical chorus descends from the chorus line, associated with early 20th century theatrical revues such as ''Ziegfeld Follies''. The chorus line was typically composed of women (dubbed ''chorus girls'' or ''chorines'') performing synchronized dances in a line. Composition In the 2018–2019 season, ensemble sizes for Broadway theatre, Broadway productions ranged from 9 (for ''Hadestown (musical), Hadestown'') to 55 (for ''The Lion King (musical), The Lion King''). Six (musical)
''Six'' (stylised in all caps) is a British Musical theatre, musical comedy in the style of a pop concert, with music, book, and lyrics by Toby Marlow and Lucy Moss. It is a modern retelling of the lives of the six wives of Henry VIII, presented in the form of a singing competition. In the show, the wives take turns telling their story to determine who suffered the most from their shared husband, but ultimately seek to reclaim their individual identities and rewrite their stories. The musical premiered at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 2017, where it was performed by students from Cambridge University. ''Six'' premiered in the West End theatre, West End at the Arts Theatre in January 2019, and has since embarked on a UK tour. Jeff Award
The Joseph Jefferson Award, more commonly known informally as the Jeff Award, is given for theatre arts produced in the Chicago area. Founded in 1968, the awards are named in tribute to actor Joseph Jefferson, a 19th-century American theater star who, as a child, was a player in Chicago's first theater company. Two types of awards are given: "Equity" (annual judging season August 1 to July 31) for work done under an Actors' Equity Association contract, and "Non-Equity" (annual judging season April 1 to March 31) for non-union work. Award recipients are determined by a secret ballot. Award categories In 2018, the committee merged the actor and actress performance categories, eliminating gender from consideration. The Actors' Equity Association (AEA), commonly called Actors' Equity or simply Equity, is an American trade union, labor union representing those who work in Theatre, live theatrical performance. Performers appearing in live stage productions without a Musical theatre#Definitions, book or through-storyline (vaudeville, cabarets, circuses) may be represented by the American Guild of Variety Artists (AGVA). The AEA works to negotiate quality living conditions, livable wages, and benefits for performers and stage managers. A theater or production that is not produced and performed by AEA members may be called "non-Equity". The Laurence Olivier Awards, or simply The Olivier Awards, are presented annually by the Society of London Theatre to recognize excellence in West End theatre, professional theatre in London. Tony Awards
The Antoinette Perry Award for Excellence in Broadway Theatre, more commonly known as a Tony Award, recognizes excellence in live Broadway theatre. The awards are presented by the American Theatre Wing and The Broadway League at an annual ceremony in Manhattan. The ceremony is usually held in June. The awards are given for Broadway productions and performances. One is also given for regional theatre. Understudy
In theatre, an understudy, referred to in opera as cover or covering, is a performer who learns the lines and blocking or choreography of a regular actor, actress, or other performer in a play. Should the regular actor or actress be unable to appear on stage, the understudy takes over the part. Usually when the understudy takes over, the theater manager announces the cast change prior to the start of the performance. Coined in 1874, the term ''understudy'' has more recently generally been applied only to performers who can back up a role, but still regularly perform in another role. The Lion King (musical)
''The Lion King'' is a stage musical with music by Elton John, lyrics by Tim Rice, and a book by Roger Allers and Irene Mecchi, with additional music and lyrics by Lebo M, Mark Mancina, Jay Rifkin, Julie Taymor, and Hans Zimmer. Hadestown (musical)
''Hadestown'' is a musical with music, lyrics, and a book by Anaïs Mitchell. It tells a version of the ancient Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice. Eurydice, a young girl looking for something to eat, goes to work in a hellish industrial version of the Greek underworld to escape poverty and the cold, and her poor singer-songwriter lover Orpheus comes to rescue her. The original sung-through version of the musical was performed in the town of Barre, Vermont, in 2006, followed by Vergennes, Vermont the same year and a tour in Vermont and Massachusetts in 2007. Mitchell, unsure about the future of the musical, turned it into a concept album, released in 2010.
