Chios (regional Unit)
Chios ( el, Περιφερειακή ενότητα Χίου, ) is one of the regional units of Greece. It is part of the region of North Aegean. The capital of the regional unit is the town of Chios. The regional unit consists of the islands of Chios, Psara, Oinousses and some smaller uninhabited islands (including Antipsara), all in the Aegean Sea. Administration The regional unit Chios is subdivided into 3 municipalities. These are (number as in the map in the infobox): * Chios (1) * Oinousses (2) * Psara (3) Prefecture As a part of the 2011 Kallikratis government reform, the regional unit Chios was created out of the former prefecture Chios ( el, Νομός Χὶου). Prefectures Of Greece
During the first administrative division of independent Greece in 1833–1836 and again from 1845 until their abolition with the Kallikratis reform in 2010, the prefectures ( el, νομοί, sing. νομός, translit=nomoi, sing. nomós) were the country's main administrative unit. They are now defunct, and have been approximately replaced by regional units. They are called departments in ISO 3166-2:GR and by the United Nations Group of Experts on Geographical Names. The prefectures were the second-degree organization of local government, grouped into 13 regions or (before 1987) 10 geographical departments, and in turn divided into provinces and comprising a number of communities and municipalities. The prefectures became self-governing entities in 1994, when the first prefectural-level elections took place. The prefects were previously appointed by the government. Omiroupoli
Omiroupoli ( el, Ομηρούπολη) is a former municipality in the central part of on the island of Chios, North Aegean, Greece. Since the 2011 local government reform it is part of the municipality Chios, of which it is a municipal unit. The municipal unit has an area of 155.015 km2. Population 7,527 people (2011 census). The seat of the municipality was Vrontados (pop. 5,323), the second largest town on the island (after Chios (town)). The next largest towns are Lagkáda (760), Karyaí (618), and Sykiáda (562). Tradition claims that epic poet Homer (Όμηρος) was born and lived here, thus the name of the municipal unit. Mastichochoria
Mastichochoria ( el, Μαστιχοχώρια, , lit. "the mastic villages" in English) is a former municipality on the island of Chios (Χίος), North Aegean, Greece. Since the 2011 local government reform it is part of the municipality Chios, of which it is a municipal unit. It is located in the southwestern and extreme southern part of the island. It is the largest municipal unit in land area on Chios at 211.687 km2. Its population was 3,672 at the 2001 census. The seat of the municipality was Pyrgi (Πυργί) (pop. 755). The next largest villages are Kalamotí (Καλαμωτń) (569), Armólia (Αρμόλια)(442), Mestá (Μεστά) (337), and Lithío (Λιθί) (397). Kardamyla ( el, Καρδάμυλα) is a village and a former municipality on the island of Chios, North Aegean, Greece. Since the 2011 local government reform it is part of the municipality Chios, of which it is a municipal unit. It is located in the northeastern corner of the island, opposite the island of Oinousses to the east. It has a land area of 182.480 km². It had a population of 2,234 in 2011. Kardamyla (pop. 710), the seat of the former municipality, is located on the coast of a small bay.
