Chinese In Samoa
The majority of Chinese nationals currently residing in Samoa are businessmen, labour workers, and shopowners in the southwestern Pacific island nation of Samoa, and there are at least 30,000 people in Samoa who are of mixed Samoan and Chinese descent, although they are classified as ethnic Samoans in official census. Around the world, about 25% of all Samoans claim Chinese ancestry. Nearly all Chinese nationals in Samoa reside within the Apia municipal area; neighbouring American Samoa, also has a small population of Chinese expatriates. The Chinese community in Samoa is growing and becoming economically strong. A new wave of northern Chinese migrants are moving to Samoa, bringing their culture and languages with them. Atu'u, American Samoa
Atu'u is a village on Tutuila Island, American Samoa. It is located on the coast of Pago Pago Harbor, close to the capital, Pago Pago. Atu'u is the location of two tuna canneries, the main employers in American Samoa. According to business license records from the Government of American Samoa, the village of Atuu is home to 28 commercial businesses. Lonely Planet is a travel guide book publisher. Founded in Australia in 1973, the company has printed over 150 million books. History Early years Lonely Planet was founded by married couple Maureen Wheeler, Maureen and Tony Wheeler. In 1972, they embarked on an overland trip through Europe and Asia to Australia, following the route of the Oxford and Cambridge Far Eastern Expedition. Samoa Democratic United Party
The Samoan Democratic United Party (SDUP) was the main opposition party of Samoa from 2003 to 2008. The SDUP was formed in 2003 from the Samoan National Development Party (SNDP) and the Samoan United Independent Party (SUIP). During the 2006 Samoan general election, they won 10 of the 49 seats, but one member lost his seat after an election petition ruling in August 2006. At the end of August 2006, the party announced it had a new leader, Asiata Sale'imoa Va'ai. The long-standing former leader, Le Mamea Ropati, had disputed the change of leadership. Following the departure of Ropati and his deputy Sililoto Tolo Tuaifaiva, the party dropped to seven MPs, and ceased to be recognised in the House. A'eau Peniamina Le'avai (born 1942) is a Samoan politician and '' matai''. He served as the Speaker of the Samoan Legislative Assembly from 1988 to 1991. He is a member of the Tautua Samoa Party. Peniamina was educated at Fiji School of Medicine and the University of London and later worked as a dentist. He was first elected to Parliament as a member of the Human Rights Protection Party in the 1985 general election. He was re-elected in 1988, and served as Speaker of the Assembly from 1988 to 1991, before losing his seat at the 1991 election. Peniamina was banished from his village after announcing his intention to run as a candidate for the Samoan National Development Party at the 2001 election. He was elected despite this, and was the opposition's candidate for Speaker, but was defeated by 28 votes to 21.
