"Child in Time" is a song by English rock band Deep Purple, released on their fourth studio album, ''Deep Purple in Rock'' in 1970. It is the longest track on the album, running over ten minutes. The song's lyrics are loosely inspired by the Cold War. The song is notable for showcasing singer Ian Gillan's full vocal range and the instrumental jam section between guitarist Ritchie Blackmore and organist Jon Lord. History and characteristics Ian Gillan said that the organ riff in "Child in Time" is based on It's a Beautiful Day's 1969 song " Bombay Calling". It's a Beautiful Day in return borrowed Purple's "Wring That Neck" and turned it into "Don and Dewey" on their second album '' Marrying Maiden'' (1970). The song started with organist Jon Lord playing "Bombay Calling", which the band then re-arranged and changed the structure. It's A Beautiful Day
It's a Beautiful Day is an American band formed in San Francisco, California, in 1967, featuring vocalist Pattie Santos along with violinist David LaFlamme and his wife, Linda LaFlamme, on keyboards. David LaFlamme, who as a youth had once performed as a soloist with the Utah Symphony Orchestra, had previously been in the group Orkustra playing five-string violin. The other members of It's a Beautiful Day in its early years were Val Fuentes (drums), Mitchell Holman (bass) and Hal Wagenet (guitar). Although they were one of the notable San Francisco bands to emerge from 1967's Summer of Love, the group never achieved the level of success that contemporaries such as the Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, and Santana did, with whom they had connections. ''Live at the Budokan'' is a live album by the Ian Gillan Band, recorded live on 22 September 1977 in Tokyo, Japan. Originally it was released only in Japan, in March 1978 by EastWorld Records, being ''Live at the Budokan'' (EWS-81112) and ''Live at the Budokan Vol. 2'' (EWS81113). Each was a single LP in a gatefold sleeve. Several songs from the set did not make it to the albums, as evidenced by audience tapes. In August 1983 it was re-issued as a double-album in the UK by Virgin Records, titled ''Live at the Budokan Volumes I & II'' (VGD3507), housed in a single LP sleeve. In Australia, it would also be released as a double-album in 1983 (Interfusion L45837). This had a gatefold sleeve, with different artwork to the UK release. The Ian Gillan Band were an English Progressive rock, progressive Jazz fusion, jazz-rock band formed by singer Ian Gillan of Deep Purple in 1975. Their sound is a departure from the Heavy metal music, heavy metal of Deep Purple by featuring a Progressive rock, progressive jazz fusion sound, more similar to bands such as Brand X. ''Deep Purple in Concert'' is a live album by the English hard rock band Deep Purple, recorded by the BBC for their "In Concert" live series in 1970 and 1972. First released in 1980 in the UK, with the current US edition being made available in 2001. Album content Sides 1 and 2 of the LP (later the first CD) feature the live recording from the BBC Studios in London on 19 February 1970; the band stepped in at the last minute for Joe Cocker, who cancelled his scheduled appearance. DJ John Peel introduced the tracks as they were performed. Sides 3 and 4 of the LP (later the second CD) are the gig from 9 March 1972, this time with DJ Mike Harding as compere. ''Scandinavian Nights (Live in Stockholm 1970)'' is a double live-album by the English hard rock band Deep Purple. It was recorded in the Stockholm Konserthuset on 12 November 1970. It was originally released in 1988. Background This concert was originally recorded at the Konserthuset on 12 November 1970, by Sveriges Radio, (Swedish National Radio), and first broadcast part of it on the 14th, on a live concert radio show called "Midnight Hour" with the remaining tracks broadcast in 1982. A Bootleg of the full show called "Alive Tribute To Wally" appeared in the mid 80's. The tapes were re-mixed by Tom Leader at Angel Recording Studios in London, and officially released in October 1988, under the title of "Scandinavian Nights" in Europe. ''Made in Japan'' is a double live album by English rock band Deep Purple, recorded during their first tour of Japan in August 1972. It was originally released on 8 December 1972 in Japan, with a US release on 30 March 1973, and became a critical and commercial success. The band were well known for their strong stage act, and had privately recorded several shows, or broadcast them on radio, but were unenthusiastic about recording a live album until their Japanese record company decided it would be good for publicity. ''Concerto for Group and Orchestra'' is a live album by Deep Purple and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Malcolm Arnold. Recorded at London's Royal Albert Hall in September 1969, it consists of a concerto composed by Jon Lord, with lyrics by Ian Gillan. The first full length album to feature Gillan on vocals and Roger Glover on bass, it was released on vinyl in December 1969. It was also the last Purple album distributed in the US by Tetragrammaton Records, which went defunct shortly after. The original performance included three additional songs: " Hush", "Wring That Neck", and " Child in Time". These were added to a 2002 reissue.
