Chief Of The Defence Staff (Nigeria)
The chief of defence staff (CDS) is the head of the Nigerian Armed Forces and the most senior uniformed military adviser to the minister of defence and the president of Nigeria. The chief of the defence staff is based at the Defence Headquarters, Abuja and works alongside the permanent secretary of defence. It is occupied by the most senior commissioned officer appointed by the president of Nigeria. The position was established for the first time under Nigeria's 1979 constitution. The current chief of defence staff is General Christopher Musa, who succeeded General Lucky Irabor in June 2023. General (Nigeria)
General (or full general to distinguish it from the lower general officer ranks) is the highest rank achievable by serving officers of the Nigerian Army. It ranks above Lieutenant-general (Nigeria), lieutenant-general and is subordinate to the rank of Field marshal (Nigeria), field marshal, which is only awarded as an honorary rank to the incumbent president of Nigeria in his capacity as the commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces of Nigeria. The rank of general is a four-star rank. It is equivalent to a Admiral (Nigerian Navy), full admiral in the Nigerian Navy or an air chief marshal in the Nigerian Air Force. The chief of army staff (COAS) has been the title of the professional head of the Nigerian Army since 1966. Prior to 1966, the title was General Officer Commanding, Nigerian Army (GOCNA). Since 1980, the post has been immediately subordinate to the chief of defence staff, the post held by the head of the Nigerian Armed Forces. The position is often occupied by the most senior officer appointed by the president. Al-Amin Daggash
Al-Amin Musa Daggash (born 1 October 1942) is a retired Air Marshal of the Nigerian Air Force who served as the 7th Chief of Defence Staff of Nigeria from 1998 to 1999 under the General Abdulsalami Abubakar regime. He was the first non-army officer to hold that position in Nigeria's history, before him, this position was exclusively occupied by army officers. He was also the first and till date the only non-army officer to be the commandant of the Nigerian Defence Academy, Kaduna. During the Abdulsalami Abubakar administration, Daggash was third in command and for that, he was awarded the distinctive national honour of Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON) in the government gazette 179 volume 85 December 1998, which was rescinded by the Obasanjo administration. Abdulsalami Abubakar
Abdulsalami Abubakar (; born 13 June 1942) is a retired Nigerian army general who served as the military head of state of Nigeria from 1998 to 1999. He was also Chief of Defence Staff from 1997 to 1998. He succeeded General Sani Abacha upon the latter's death. During his leadership, Nigeria adopted a modified version of the 1979 constitution, which provided for multiparty elections. He transferred power to president-elect Olusegun Obasanjo on 29 May 1999.
