Chief Justice Of The Bahamas
The Chief Justice of the Bahamas heads the Supreme Court of the Bahamas. Legal basis The position of Chief Justice is authorised by Article 93(2) of the Constitution of the Bahamas. Under Article 94(1), the Governor-General appoints the Chief Justice on the recommendation of the Prime Minister after consultation with the Leader of the Opposition. Removal of the Chief Justice is governed by Article 96(6); the Prime Minister recommends removal to the Governor-General, who then forms a tribunal of at least three members selected by the Governor-General in accordance with the advice of the Prime Minister. Under Article 98(2), the Chief Justice may be invited to sit on the Court of Appeal by the President of that Court. Supreme Court Of The Bahamas
The Supreme Court of the Bahamas is the third highest court in the adjudicative hierarchy of the Commonwealth of the Bahamas. The court was created by Article 93(1) of the Constitution. Before that, the Supreme Court was governed by the Supreme Court Act of 1896. The Neo-Georgian style building which is home to the Supreme Court in New Providence is located on Bank Lane. Ground was broken for the building in 1921 by then Governor of the Colony of the Bahamas, Sir Harry Cordeaux. The courthouse is similar in design to the Central Public Building which is north of the building. Denis Eustace Gilbert Malone
Sir Denis Eustace Gilbert Malone (24 November 1922 – 2000) was a British jurist in the Caribbean. He graduated from Wycliffe College in 1941. He was commissioned a flight sergeant in the Royal Air Force on 15 May 1945. He served as Solicitor-General of Barbados, and then in February 1961 was appointed a Puisne Judge of the Supreme Court of British Honduras (today Belize). He rose to Chief Justice of Belize in 1974 until his replacement in 1977 by Albert Staine, who became the first native of Belize to hold that position. He was knighted in the 1977 Silver Jubilee and Birthday Honours. He went on to serve on the Supreme Court of the Bahamas as a Justice from May 1979 to September 1983, Acting Chief Justice from September to December 1983, and Senior Justice from January 1984 to November 1989.
