''Chicano Power!'' (subtitled: ''Latin Rock In The USA 1968-1976'') is a 1998 compilation album released by Soul Jazz Records. The album contains Latin bands predominantly from the United States during the late 1960s and 1970s who combined rock, jazz and Latin music. The album was released to positive reception from online music database AllMusic but to more lukewarm or mixed reviews from ''The Guardian'' and the ''NME''. Music and content ''Chicano Power'' is a compilation album that focuses on Latin bands throughout the United States who combined rock, jazz, and Latin music in the late 1960s and 1970s. Richie Unterberger of AllMusic noted that despite the title, the album contained music beyond Mexican-American bands from Los Angeles and San Francisco but also Puerto Rican-American groups and artists from New York and Miami. Soul Jazz Records
Soul Jazz Records is a British record label based in London. Outside of releasing records, the label also publishes books, occasionally films and performs as a DJ set. The music releases labels from a variety of genres, including reggae, house, hip hop, punk rock, jazz, funk, bossa nova and soul. History Soul Jazz Records was founded by Stuart Baker in 1991. Baker purchased his first record at the age of 10 and prior to starting the label, had his roots selling records at a secondhand record vinyl stall in the Camden market in the late 1980s. The label initially worked doing straight reissues of old albums before releasing '' Nu Yorica!'', a double album of classic salsa and Latin funk from the 1970s. Peter Reilly spoke on the labels behalf that ''Nu Yorica'' was their first "really successful record" form Soul Jazz noting that "it was more of a kind of cult thing up until then. Santana is an American rock band formed in San Francisco in 1966 by American guitarist Carlos Santana. The band has undergone multiple recording and performing line-ups in its history, with Santana the only consistent member. ''Nu Yorica! – Culture Clash in New York City: Experiments in Latin Music 1970–77'' is a 1996 compilation album of Latin music released by Soul Jazz Records in 1996. The album was received positive reviews in '' The Guardian'' and ''Muzik'' on its initial release. A follow-up album titled ''Nu Yorica 2!'' was released in 1997. Chicano Power Movement
Chicano or Chicana is a chosen identity for many Mexican Americans in the United States. The label ''Chicano'' is sometimes used interchangeably with ''Mexican American'', although the terms have different meanings. While Mexican-American identity was related to encouraging assimilation into White American society and separating the community from the African-American political struggle, Chicano identity emerged among anti-assimilationist youth. Some belonged to the Pachuco subculture, and claimed the term (which had previously been a classist and racist slur). The term ''Chicano'' was widely reclaimed by ethnic Mexicans in the 1960s and 1970s to express political empowerment, ethnic solidarity, and pride in being of Indigenous descent (with many using the Nahuatl language), diverging from the more assimilationist ''Mexican American'' term. Tierra (band)
Tierra is an American Latin R&B band, originally from Los Angeles, California, United States, that was first established in 1972 by former El Chicano members Rudy Salas (guitar) and his brother Steve Salas (vocals). The other original members were Bobby Loya , Bobby Navarrete ( reeds), Joey Guerra (keyboards), Steve Falomir (bass guitar), Philip Madayag ( drums), and Andre Baeza (percussion). Their biggest hit was the 1980 remake of The Intruders' 1967 hit " Together", written by Gamble & Huff, which reached No. 18 on the ''Billboard'' Hot 100, and No. 9 on the US '' Billboard'' R&B chart. It was a number one record on Los Angeles radio. Malo (band)
Malo (English: "Bad") is an American musical group known for its blend of Latino, rock, jazz and blues. The San Francisco-based ensemble was led by Richard Bean, Arcelio Garcia, and Jorge Santana, the brother of Latin-rock guitarist Carlos Santana. Three of Malo's original members (Garcia, Pablo Tellez, and Santana) had previously played in the band The Malibus. The other three members (Abel Zarate, Roy Murray, and Richard Spremich) had played together in the group Naked Lunch. (Zarate also played in a band called the Righteous Ones together.) History The band featured full horn and percussion sections in the style of contemporary bands Blood, Sweat & Tears and Chicago. El Chicano
El Chicano was an American brown-eyed soul group from Los Angeles, California, whose style incorporated various modern music genres including rock, funk, soul, blues, jazz, and salsa. The group's name was from Chicano, a term for United States citizens of typically Mexican descent. History El Chicano, originally formed by Freddie Sanchez under the name The VIP's arose during a period of increasing Chicano consciousness in America. Their initial hit, "Viva Tirado", was a jazzy soul rock rendition of Gerald Wilson's original song about a bullfighter. The song did very well on Los Angeles radio and remained #1 for thirteen straight weeks. Other notable tracks recorded by El Chicano are the funky "Tell Her She's Lovely" as well as a cover of Van Morrison's 1967 hit, "Brown Eyed Girl". Azteca (band)
Azteca was a Latin rock band formed in 1972 by Coke Escovedo and his brother Pete Escovedo, who had just finished stints with Latin rock pioneering band Santana. Azteca was the first large-scale attempt to combine multiple musical elements in the context of a Latin orchestra setting, and featured horns, woodwinds, multiple keyboards, three vocalists, guitars, drums, and multiple Latin percussionists.
