Frances Farrand Dodge
Frances Julia Farrand Dodge (22 November 1878 – 12 January 1969) was an American artist and teacher. Early life and education The eldest of four girls, Frances Farrand was born on 22 November 1878 in Lansing, Michigan. Her father, Hart Augustus Farrand (1850–1938), had a grocery store in Lansing and her mother, Effie Ann Shank (1854–1918) was an accomplished wood carver who created much of the furniture for their home. She studied art at the Art Academy of Cincinnati, the Michigan State University, Syracuse University, and the Art Students League of New York. Among her teachers were Frank Duveneck, Lewis Henry Meakin, and Joseph Pennell. In 1907 she married Arthur Charles Dodge (1880–1969) in Lansing, Michigan. John Henry Vanderpoel (November 15, 1857 – May 2, 1911), born Johannes (Jan) van der Poel, was a Dutch-American artist and teacher, best known as an instructor of figure drawing. His book ''The Human Figure'', a standard art school resource featuring numerous drawings based on his teaching at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, was published in 1907. Life and work Vanderpoel was born in the Haarlemmermeer, Netherlands, the seventh of ten children. His mother died in 1867, and in 1869 he emigrated with his father and siblings to the United States. He studied at the Chicago Academy of Design, which later became the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. In 1886, he went to Europe, studying for two years at Académie Julian in Paris with Gustave Boulanger and Jules Lefebvre. Edgar Alwin Payne (1 March 1883 – 8 April 1947) was an American painter. He was known as a Western landscape painter and muralist. Early life Payne was born near Cassville, Barry County, Missouri, in the heart of the Ozarks.. Cassville is in southwest Missouri, near the Arkansas border. According to the U.S. Census of 1900, he resided with his parents, two sisters and five brothers in Prairie Grove, Washington County, Arkansas; his Alabama-born father was employed as a carpenter. Edgar’s occupation was listed as “carpenter, apprentice.” Leaving home on several occasions, Payne painted houses, signs, portraits, murals, and local theater stage sets, to pay his way. LeRoy Neiman (born LeRoy Leslie Runquist, June 8, 1921 – June 20, 2012) was an American artist known for his brilliantly colored, expressionist paintings and screenprints of athletes, musicians, and sporting events. Joseph Kleitsch
Joseph Kleitsch (June 6, 1882 – November 16, 1931) was a Hungarian-American portrait and plein air painter who holds a high place in the early California School of Impressionism. Biography Born in the village of Sânmihaiu Român, old Hungarian province of Banat, now in Romania, on June 6, 1882, Kleitsch, an ethnic German, began painting at the age of seven. He later pursued art training in Budapest, Munich and Paris. He immigrated to the United States in 1912 and two years later, on July 22, 1914, he married Edna Gregatis of Chicago, Illinois with whom he would have his only child, Eugene. Influenced by his visits to the famous museums of Europe, Kleitsch continued with his love of portrait and figurative painting after relocating to California.
