Cheshire West (European Parliament Constituency)
Prior to its uniform adoption of proportional representation in 1999, the United Kingdom used first-past-the-post for the European elections in England, Scotland and Wales. The European Parliament constituencies used under that system were smaller than the later regional constituencies and only had one Member of the European Parliament each. The constituency of Cheshire West was one of them. From 1979 to 1984, it consisted of the Westminster Parliament constituencies of Bebington and Ellesmere Port, Birkenhead, City of Chester, Nantwich, Northwich, Wallasey, and Wirral. European Parliament
The European Parliament (EP) is one of the legislative bodies of the European Union and one of its seven institutions. Together with the Council of the European Union (known as the Council and informally as the Council of Ministers), it adopts European legislation, following a proposal by the European Commission. Wirral (UK Parliament Constituency)
Wirral was a county constituency which returned one Member of Parliament (MP) to the House of Commons of the Parliament of the United Kingdom from 1885 to 1983, elected by the first past the post voting system. The constituency was located on the Wirral Peninsula, historically part of Cheshire in North West England. History Wirral was created by the Redistribution of Seats Act 1885 for the 1885 general election. As the population of the Wirral peninsula grew, its boundaries were redrawn to allow for additional constituencies to be created. From 1974, its territory was split between the newly created Metropolitan Borough of Wirral, part of the metropolitan county of Merseyside, and the borough of Ellesmere Port and Neston which remained part of Cheshire. Lyndon Henry Arthur Harrison, Baron Harrison (born 28 September 1947) is a British Labour Party politician. Early life Harrison was born on 28 September 1947, to Charles and Edith Harrison. He was educated at the City of Oxford High School for Boys, a state school in Oxford, Oxfordshire. He then attended the University of Warwick, graduating in 1970 with a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree in English and American studies. He continued his studies at the University of Sussex where he completed a Master of Arts (MA) degree in American studies in 1971. Political career He was a Labour Party local councillor from 1981 to 1990, serving on Cheshire County Council. He was Member of the European Parliament (MEP) from 1989 to 1999, representing the Cheshire West constituency. 1989 European Parliament Election In The United Kingdom
The 1989 European Parliament election, was the third European election to be held in the United Kingdom. It was held on 15 June. The electoral system was First Past the Post in England, Scotland and Wales and Single Transferable Vote in Northern Ireland. The turnout was again the lowest in Europe. This election saw the best performance ever by the Green Party (UK) (formerly the Ecology Party), collecting over 2 million votes and 15% of the vote share. It had only received 70,853 as the Ecology Party in the previous election. However, because of First Past the Post system, the Green Party did not gain a single MEP, while the Scottish National Party received 1 seat with only 3% of the vote share. The Green Party's vote total of 2,299,287 remains its best performance in a national election, as does its percentage result of 14.5%. 1979 European Parliament Election In The United Kingdom
The 1979 European Parliament election, was the first European election to be held in the United Kingdom after the European Communities (EC) decided to directly elect representatives to the European Parliament. It was held on 7 June. Elections were also held in eight other EC states. European elections were incorporated into UK law by the European Assembly Elections Act 1978. Out of the 410 members of the European Parliament, 81 were elected from the UK. The electoral system was First Past the Post in England, Scotland and Wales (electing 78 MEPs in total) and Single Transferable Vote in Northern Ireland (electing 3 MEPs). The result was a landslide victory for the Conservative Party, which won 60 of the 78 seats available in England, Wales and Scotland.
