Chennai Grand Masters
Chennai Grand Masters is an annual closed chess tournament held in Chennai, India. Aravindh Chithambaram is the current champion. 2023 The 2023 Chennai Grand Masters was organized from December 15 to December 21 at The Leela Palace Chennai. It was organized by MGD1, NODWIN Gaming, and ChessBase India, with support from the Tamil Nadu Government and Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu. The tournament was announced only 4 days prior to its start, which led to criticism that the tournament was held at the last minute to help Gukesh Dommaraju and Arjun Erigaisi qualify for the Candidates Tournament 2024. However, FIDE deputy president Viswanathan Anand explained that the organization of the tournament is within the rules. After the seventh round, Gukesh and Arjun were tied for the first place with 4.5 points each. Sanan Sjugirov
Sanan Sjugirov (; born 31 January 1993) is a Russian chess grandmaster of Kalmyk origin who represents Hungary. He was European champion and world champion in his age category. Sjugirov competed in the FIDE World Cup in 2009 and 2015. Chess career Sjugirov won the World Youth Chess Championships in 2003, in the U-10 section, and 2007, in the U-14. In the European Youth Chess Championships, he won in the U-12 division in 2004 and 2005, and in the U-14 in 2007. In 2008, Sjugirov won the Russian U-20 Championship and the First Saturday GM tournament of May in Budapest. Abhimanyu Samir Puranik (; born 11 February 2000, Mumbai) is an Indian chess grandmaster (GM, 2017). Career In 2016 and 2018, Puranik scored 5.5 points out of 9 in the main tournament of the ''Isle of Man Open'' chess festival. Karthikeyan Murali
Karthikeyan Murali (born 5 January 1999) is an Indian chess grandmaster. He was awarded the title of Grandmaster by FIDE in 2015. Karthikeyan is a two-time national champion. Chess career Born in Thanjavur, Karthikeyan learnt chess at the age of five. In December 2011, he won the Under 12 section of the World Youth Chess Championships held in Caldas Novas, Brazil. Two years later he also won the world U16 title in Al Ain. In 2014 he tied for third place at the Abu Dhabi Masters tournament and helped the Indian team win the Under 16 Chess Olympiad in Győr, Hungary. Raunak Sadhwani (born 22 December 2005) is an Indian chess grandmaster. A chess prodigy, he became a grandmaster at the age of 13. Leon Luke Mendonca
Leon Luke Mendonca (born 13 March 2006) is an Indian chess grandmaster. He is the sixty-seventh Indian to qualify for the title of Grandmaster, which FIDE awarded him in January 2021. Chess career Mendonca became an International Master (IM) in 2019 at the age of 12 years, 11 months and 3 days. He got stuck in Eastern Europe due to COVID lockdowns in March 2020. He attained his first Grandmaster norm at the Rigochess Grandmaster tournament in Hungary in October 2020. Within a span of 21 days, he won another Grandmaster tournament at Budapest earning him the second Grandmaster norm. Mendonca achieved his third and final norm in December 2020 by finishing second at the Vergani Cup in Bassano del Grappa, Italy. Armageddon Chess
Fast chess, also known as speed chess, is a type of chess in which each player is given less time than classical chess time controls allow. Fast chess is subdivided, by decreasing time controls, into rapid chess, blitz chess, and bullet chess. Armageddon chess is a variant of fast chess with draw odds for black and unequal time controls, used as a tiebreaker of last resort. Vidit Gujrathi
Vidit Gujrathi (born 24 October 1994) is an Indian chess grandmaster. Gujrathi attained the title of grandmaster in January 2013, becoming the 30th player from India to do so. He is the fourth Indian player to have crossed the Elo rating of 2700. He is a double gold medalist at the Chess Olympiad. He is also a silver medalist at the Asian Games. Alexey Vasilyevich Sarana (born 26 January 2000) is a Russian chess grandmaster playing for Serbia. He won the European Individual Chess Championship in 2023. His father is Ukrainian and lives near Kyiv. Sarana left Russia in March 2022, stating that he does not plan to return until the end of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
