Chemnitz (electoral District)
Chemnitz is an electoral constituency (German language, German: ''Wahlkreis'') represented in the Bundestag. It elects one member via first-past-the-post voting. Under the current constituency numbering system, it is designated as constituency 161. It is located in western Saxony, comprising the city of Chemnitz. Chemnitz was created for the inaugural 1990 German federal election, 1990 federal election after German reunification. Since 2025, it has been represented by Alexander Gauland of the Alternative for Germany (AfD). Geography Chemnitz is located in western Saxony. As of the 2021 federal election, it is coterminous with the independent city of Chemnitz. History Chemnitz was created after German reunification in 1990, then known as ''Chemnitz I''. Bundestag
The Bundestag (, "Federal Diet (assembly), Diet") is the lower house of the Germany, German Federalism in Germany, federal parliament. It is the only constitutional body of the federation directly elected by the German people. The Bundestag was established by Title III of the Basic Law for the Federal Republic of Germany () in 1949 as one of the legislative bodies of Germany, the other being the German Bundesrat, Bundesrat. It is thus the historical successor to the earlier Reichstag (Weimar Republic), Reichstag. 2021 German Federal Election
The 2021 German federal election was held in Germany on 26 September 2021 to elect the members of the 20th Bundestag. State elections in Berlin and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern were also held. Incumbent chancellor Angela Merkel, first elected in 2005, chose not to run again, marking the first time that an incumbent Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany did not seek re-election. With 25.7% of total votes, the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) recorded their best result since 2005, and emerged as the largest party for the first time since 2002. The ruling CDU/CSU, which had led a grand coalition with the SPD since 2013, recorded their worst ever result with 24.1%, a significant decline from 32.9% in 2017. Petra Zais
Petra Zais (22 March 1957 – 7 October 2021) was a German politician. Biography Zais graduated from secondary school in 1975 and subsequently worked as an apprentice papermaker in until 1980. After the Peaceful Revolution, she worked as a kindergarten teacher and attended the from 1991 to 1993. She served as mobile consultant at ''Kulturbüro Sachsen'' from 2001 to 2010. Zais died on 7 October 2021, at the age of 64. Political activities Zais was a member of the Socialist Unity Party of Germany from 1977 to 1990. She was active in her support for the communist regime of East Germany during that time. Bürgerrechtsbewegung Solidarität (BüSo), or the Civil Rights Movement Solidarity, is a German political party founded by Helga Zepp-LaRouche, the widow of U.S. political activist Lyndon LaRouche. The BüSo is part of the worldwide LaRouche movement which, according to the ''Berliner Zeitung'', operates in Germany as the Schiller Institute, the LaRouche Youth Movement, and the BüSo. Democracy in Motion (, ) was a minor party in Germany. The basis for the party's founding was a petition on change.org, in which petitioners promised to run as a party in September 2017 at the federal election if the petition reached at least 100,000 signatures, which it reached on 20 July 2017. Frank Heinrich (born 25 January 1964) is a German theologian, social pedagogue and politician of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU). Background and education Heinrich was born in Siegen. At the age of three he moved to the southern part of Germany together with his family where his parents managed a retirement home.
