Chattahoochee Bay Railroad
The Chattahoochee and Gulf Railroad was a short line railroad operating from 2003 to 2006 between Columbus, Georgia, and Dothan, Alabama, on former Central of Georgia and Norfolk Southern tracks. Initially the railroad was a subsidiary of Gulf & Ohio Railways. In 2006, the railroad was acquired by Genesee & Wyoming and combined with the adjacent H and S Railroad out of Dothan to form the Chattahoochee Bay Railroad. Commodities include chemicals, forest products, food products, and feed, which generate approximately 5,500 annual carloads. History In 1900 the Chattahoochee and Gulf Railroad completed the construction of a line from Columbia to Lockhart, Alabama. The railroad was leased and operated by the Central of Georgia Railway (CofG) until the line was abandoned from Lockhart to Hartford in 1940. The H and S Railroad was a shortline railroad operating of track from Dothan to Taylor, Alabama. Upon its start in 1992 the railroad was a Gulf & Ohio subsidiary. The railroad was purchased by Genesee & Wyoming Railroad in 2006 and was combined with a neighboring property, the Chattahoochee and Gulf Railroad, to form the Chattahoochee Bay Railroad. History On April 29, 1992 of the Hartford & Slocomb was abandoned between Taylor and Hartford. The remainder was sold by the Itel Corporation to Gulf & Ohio subsidiary H and S Railroad. Primary traffic consisted of railcars moving to and from a repair facility near Taylor. The Bay Line Railroad is one of several short line railroad companies owned by Genesee & Wyoming Inc. It operates between Panama City, Florida, and Dothan, Alabama, including a branch from Grimes to Abbeville, Alabama, reached via trackage rights on CSX's Dothan Subdivision between Dothan and Grimes. The line interchanges with CSX at Cottondale, Florida and Dothan, Alabama, and with the Hilton & Albany Railroad at Hilton, Georgia. The Central of Georgia Railway started as the Central Rail Road and Canal Company in 1833. As a way to better attract investment capital, the railroad changed its name to Central Rail Road and Banking Company of Georgia. This railroad was constructed to join the Macon and Western Railroad at Macon, Georgia, in the United States, and run to Savannah, Georgia, Savannah. This created a rail link from Chattanooga, on the Tennessee River, to seaports on the Atlantic Ocean. It took from 1837 to 1843 to build the railroad from Savannah to the eastern bank of the Ocmulgee River at Macon; a bridge into the city was not built until 1851. Lockhart is a town in Covington County, Alabama, United States. At the 2020 census, the population was 445. Geography Lockhart is located in southern Covington County at (31.011435, -86.350652), north of the Florida state line. Lockhart is bordered by the town of Florala to the east.
