Charles Davis (saxophonist)
Charles Davis (May 20, 1933 – July 15, 2016) was an American jazz saxophonist and composer. Davis played alto, tenor and baritone saxophone, and performed extensively with Archie Shepp and Sun Ra. Biography Born in Goodman, Mississippi, Davis was raised in Chicago. After being sent to boarding school at St Benedict's in Milwaukee, he graduated from DuSable High School before studying at the Chicago School of Music. Davis also studied privately with John Hauser. During the 1950s, he played with Billie Holiday, Ben Webster, Sun Ra and Dinah Washington. Davis also performed and recorded with Kenny Dorham, with whom he associated musically for many years. During the 1960s, he performed and recorded with Elvin Jones, Jimmy Garrison, Illinois Jacquet, Freddie Hubbard, Johnny Griffin, Steve Lacy and Ahmad Jamal, also working with Blue Mitchell, Erskine Hawkins, John Coltrane and Clifford Jordan. Greg Davis (Mississippi Politician)
Charles Gregory Davis, known as Greg Davis (born February 22, 1966) is an American attorney and the former mayor of Southaven in northern Mississippi, the state's fourth largest city, from 1997 to 2013. Prior to serving as mayor, he represented the 7th district in the Mississippi House of Representatives. He was the Republican Party's nominee for Mississippi's 1st congressional district in the 2008 special and general elections. In 2012, he was convicted on charges of embezzlement, false pretense, and making fraudulent statements and was later sentenced, however his conviction was overturned in a 2017 retrial and found not guilty. Greg attended Mitchell Hamline School of Law where he received his Juris Doctor degree in December 2021. Charlie Davis (born November 17, 1951) is an American former professional football defensive tackle in the National Football League (NFL). Davis was selected by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the ninth round of the 1974 NFL draft out of Texas Christian University. He played for seven seasons in the NFL. He was a back-up defensive tackle for the Steelers and a member of their first World Championship Super Bowl IX over the Minnesota Vikings, was traded to the St. Louis Cardinals Sep 15 1975, for whom he played from (1975–1979), and the Houston Oilers (1980). Charles Henry Davis ( – ) was a Autodidacticism, self-educated American astronomer and Rear admiral (United States), rear admiral of the United States Navy. While working for the United States Coast and Geodetic Survey, United States Coast Survey, he researched tides and currents, and located an uncharted shoal that had caused wrecks off of the coast of New York (state), New York. During the American Civil War, he commanded the Mississippi River Squadron, Western Gunboat Flotilla, where he won an important engagement in the First Battle of Memphis before capturing enemy supplies on a successful expedition up the Yazoo River. Davis was also one of the founders of the National Academy of Sciences in 1863 and he wrote several scientific books. Historian Donald L. Miller describes Davis during the time of the Civil War as "tall, solemn-looking and contemplative, with a drooping mustache that hung over his mouth."
