Charlestown, New South Wales
Charlestown is a suburb of the City of Lake Macquarie, New South Wales, Australia, and the largest suburb in Lake Macquarie and in the Greater Newcastle area. It is approximately west-south-west of the central business district of Newcastle. History The Aboriginal people in this area, the Awabakal, were the first people of this land. Originally granted to the Waratah Coal Company, the area was the site of the company's first shaft, sunk in 1873. Officially called South Waratah Colliery (later just Waratah Colliery), the pit was variously known as Charles' Pit, Raspberry Gully or The Gully Pit. These names all applied to Charlestown in its early days and the surviving name seem to have been derived from that of Charles Smith, the company's manager. The first settlers were miners from the pit. The colliery closed in 1961. Charlestown (also known as Charlestown-on-Forth) is a village in Fife, Scotland. It lies on the north shore of the Firth of Forth, around west of Limekilns and south-west of Dunfermline. The village is known for its historic 18th century lime kilns and its Georgian planned housing. History Charlestown was established in 1756 by Charles Bruce, 5th Earl of Elgin. The planned village is laid out in the shape of a letters C and E, for Charles Elgin. It was established as a harbour town for the shipment of coal mined on Lord Elgin's Fife estates, and for the production of lime. The harbour's outer basin was built around 1840. Charlestown is a census-designated place (CDP) and the main village in the town of Charlestown, Sullivan County, New Hampshire, United States. The population of the CDP was 1,078 at the 2020 census, out of 4,806 in the entire town. Geography The CDP is in the western part of Charlestown, on the east side of the Connecticut River, which forms the Vermont state line. From the river, the CDP border extends north up Clay Brook to Fling Road and Acworth Road. The border then turns south along a power line clearing that runs east of the village area, following it to Dickerson Brook and then southwest to Almar Street. The border then turns northwest up Meadow Road before continuing straight to Lower Landing Road, where it turns west and runs to the Connecticut River. History Early History and Founding Charlestown was established in 1808, named after one of its surveyors, Charles Beggs, upon , of which was designated for a town square.
