Charles Emmerson (born 1976) is a British-Australian historian. He was born in Melbourne and grew up in London. He studied Modern History at Oxford University, and pursued postgraduate studies at the Institut d'Etudes Politiques in Paris. He has worked for the International Crisis Group, the World Economic Forum, the Financial Times, and Chatham House, where he is currently a senior research fellow. He has written two well-received books: ''The Future History of the Arctic'' (2010) and ''1913: The World Before the Great War'' (2013). Emmerson has also contributed to programmes on BBC Radio 3 BBC Radio 3 is a British national radio station owned and operated by the BBC. Charles Emmerson (restaurateur)
Charles Emmerson (1835 or 1836 – 2 June 1883) was a prominent U.S.-born restaurateur, hotel proprietor and veterinarian in Singapore. He was the first veterinary surgeon to practice on the island. Early life and education Emmerson was born in the United States. He spent four years studying at the Royal Veterinary College in London, England. Career Emmerson came to Singapore in October 1860 and established a successful veterinary business in Raffles Place. He was the first veterinary surgeon to practice on the island. In 1864, he began selling several drinks, including soda water. In 1866, he established the restaurant Emmerson's Tiffin Rooms near the Cavenagh Bridge. It featured a large billiard room and sold tiffin lunches and beverages, as well as cigars and newspapers from the United States, the United Kingdom and elsewhere in Europe. Charles Emerson
Charles Henry Grigg Emerson (August 27, 1863 – February 18, 1919) was a lawyer and politician in Newfoundland. He represented Burgeo-La Poile from 1900 to 1904 as a Liberal and Fortune Bay from 1908 to 1919 as a People's Party member in the Newfoundland House of Assembly. The son of John Archibald Sinclair Emerson and Jennie Bayley, he was born in St. John's and was educated at Bishop Feild College. Emerson practised law with his uncle Prescott Emerson. He was called to the Newfoundland bar in 1891. He ran unsuccessfully for a seat in the Newfoundland assembly in an 1894 by-election. He was elected to the assembly in 1900 and then was defeated when he ran for reelection in 1904 by Conservative Robert Moulton. Charles Emerson Beecher (October 9, 1856 – February 14, 1904) was an American paleontology, paleontologist most famous for the thorough excavation, preparation and study of trilobite ventral anatomy from specimens collected at Beecher's Trilobite Bed. Beecher was rapidly promoted at Yale Peabody Museum, eventually rising to head that institution. Charles Emerson "Dink" Waters (November 25, 1910 – August 29, 1979) was an American politician who served in the Georgia State Senate. Early life Waters was born on November 25, 1910, in Ellijay, Georgia, the son of Emerson Franklin Waters and Sallie (Greer) Waters. He attended Ellijay High School in 1927 and the U.S. Military Academy in 1929. Political career Waters, a fourth generation Republican, began his political career serving as a state delegate to the 1948 Republican National Convention pledged to the Dewey–Warren ticket. He served as mayor pro temp of Ellijay from 1950 to 1951. He would later attend the 1952, 1956, 1960, and 1964 Republican Conventions. Charles Wesley Emerson (1837–1908) was the founder, namesake and first president of Emerson College in Boston, Massachusetts. Charles Emerson was also the author of a number of books dealing with oratory and a minister with the Unitarian Church. Life and career Charles Wesley Emerson was born in Pittsfield, Vermont, in 1837 to Thomas and Mary F. (Hewitt) Emerson, and he was a distant cousin of Ralph Waldo Emerson.
